2002 ES300 Air Fuel Ratio Sensor dead?
I have 175k miles on a 2002 es300
I was driving pretty aggressive today with a few times flooring it in traffic and thought nothing of it.
When I got home I disconnected my battery for 15 minutes to reset my radio and everything. Re plugged the battery in and started it up.. it was idling super low. like around 350-250 rpm. I let it sit for 5 minutes and it ended up stalling out idling. I started it back up and same thing. Then I started it up and put it in drive and the car stalled and the check engine light came on.
I also could hear a high pitched noise from under the car I never heard before. Also when I went around to the exhaust almost nothing was coming out of it. and it smelled a little odd.
I managed to get it to auto zone and the code is for a air fuel ratio sensor being faulty or dead or electrical problem with it.
On the way home the idle went back to around 500 and it felt a little better but the check engine light was still on.
Any ideas? My MPG has been kinda crappy and now this.
I will get it replaced in the morning but has anyone had this before? what caused it?
I managed to get about 240-250 miles on a full tank and it's about 70% highway 30% city and I didn't use A/C at all and drove lightly.
Unrelated: My transmission fluid is overfilled. can this affect the shifting?

When you disconnect the battery, and reconnect it the idle will be low. Because the ECU needs to get data from the various sensors as you drive, and then eventually the idle will go back to normal.
Is there a specific reason why you disconnected the battery?
Reset the code, and see if it comes back. If it does, post the code back here. What code did it show when you checked it at AutoZone?
The transmission fluid being overfilled is not linked to this.

I know the idle will be low, but not so low it will stall itself out.
I disconnected the battery to reset my ecu for the driving habits of the learning transmission.
I reset the code. it is still there.
Code : P2238

this is all related to the a/f sensor. the a/f sensor is one of the integral components in controlling fuel trims, so an a/f or oxygen sensor reading incorrectly will not only set a CEL, but your fuel economy will go way down and so will performance.

its common for them to fail over 100k miles....ive seen them go even earlier. its a normal maintenance item that will eventually fail.
the trans fluid level has no effect on this, but it will affect shift quality so id do a drain and fill with fresh toyota T-IV fluid to the proper level.

I am hoping with the sensor fixed that I will get back to my 21 city and 29-30 highway. 250 miles on a tank! Ouch.
Also hopes it helps my performance. I will report back with my findings.
If there is anyone in the cincinnati area who has an es300 2002-2003 or an es 330 please let me know. It would be great to meet up.

I have no idea what the sam hell happened but I started her up this morning and the light was off, the engine was smooth as butter idling and I got an average of 30 mpg on the highway with a/c comp off, 1 200lb passenger, spare tire in and a half tank of gas.
I feel like I should order the sensor online and change it out eventually just in case....
No idea what happened...
