Manually Close Sun roof?

1996 es300 Sun roof started giving problems closing recently. Had to push buttons several times to make it close. Sometimes it would stop half way closed then have to push button several times to complete the close.

Someone opened it the other day and now it will not close at all. (It's raining today so I'm carless.)

Is there any way to manually close the sunroof?

Thanks

Owner's manual for my 93 says to pop the cover for the controls off and then remove a screw and washer located between the moon roof tilt and slide switches. pulling it shut by hand and then closing ti the rest of the way by inserting a screwdriver with a 90 degree bend in it to use as a crank.

I'm not for certain that they are exactly the same, if you have your owner's manual there should be a section on it somewhere in the emergency section.

This happened to me before. I ended up removing the sunroof motor And pulled the sunroof shut.

Rainy Day Motivated Solution

I could not get my moon roof to close so I pulled the reading light and sunglass holder down to reveal the moon roof motor. I pulled out 2 10mm bolts to reveal the gear that needed to rotate was shaped like the inside of a doughnut. I could not get this to turn manually so I tried something else. I used a Dremel to cut a slot in the back of the gears shaft so that I could turn it with a screwdriver. The shaft is located between the 2 10mm bolts. A screwdriver alone did not have enough torque to turn the shaft but the motor still had a little life left in it, a few spurts at a time, several minutes apart. I re-mounted the motor. Using a screw driver to assist the motor while pressing the close button I was able to assist the motor and close the roof. Once it was closed I disconnected the wiring harness so that this will never by accident become an issue again. Then I re-mounted the reading light and sunglass holder. A sunroof is better than a leaky roof. I hope this helps.............. 1998 Lexus ES300
