Default check engine light 1996 es300

so im stuck on what to do here. I filled up my tank one day with unleaded at my local marathon and I was on my way to work. I was cruising at a comfortable 55mph for about 15 min on the freeway when my check engine light came on. funny thing is the car didnt skip a beat. no engine noise, no rattling, no vibrations of any kind. I figured it must have been that I didnt screw my gas cap on tight enough after the fillup or some air was in the tank but that wasnt the case. of course that little yellow light has me worried every second I drive but the dealer is charging $130 for a diagnostic test! is there any cheaper alternative I can do to pinpoint the source?

Craigslist. Down here in SoCal people are buying the readers and then charging $10-$20 to read your codes.

I found this one down here in San Diego

Not sure what part of Illinois you live in but I did find this in Chicago...

Go to autozone. They'll check your code for free.

The manager of my local AutoZone in California told me they no longer provide code scanning due to a lawsuit by mechanics over loss of business by mechanics.
