Default Instrument Cluster Problem

Hello all.
I have a 1992 ES and I'm having issues with some electrical components, namely the instrument cluster. My speedometer and tachometer no longer work, they just say 0 at all times and have been this way for probably more than a year. Does anybody know whether this is a computer problem or a display problem? Also, if anyone has any suggestions on how to fix it, please share.

Thanks in advance.

My tach wont start working right away sometimes. Like you said its random. Most times it works fine but once in a blue moon it will sit at 0. So I usually wait a minute or two then it will start to work. Any info on these problems?

It happens to me, particularly on a Monday morning b/c I drive different car on the weekend. Yes, after doing 65mph on fwy for while, the needles just jumps.

Thanks goodness that I have the radar detector Beltronics GX65 with GPS. Unlike the speedometer which I have to guess, the GPS tells me precisely how fast I go, e.g. 38 mph. Moreover, it's mounted on the front windshield, so it works like a Heads Up Display of digital speed on windshield. I never have to look down to guess. I just glance over to see the digital display.

Search on CL (Craigslist not Club Lexus).

Sorry to bring back this old thread but I have recently encountered the intermittent TACH not working until I "tap the dash" syndrome.

Any one find the culprit?

I am thinking maybe a fractured solder joint???

Replaced sensor, no joy :-(

TIA,

Jim

Thank you Jason.

Well, good to know it is the Custer and not the sensors.

Will need to check the solder joints and maybe some of the components for a burnt appearance.

You probably won't find any visible problems.

My RPMs work but my Sped and Odo don't- never did- well since I've had it. It's a 90 LS400, has HIDs and panel flickers when I release the foot brake and driver Hlight takes a few tries to turn on... Not a car guy, just thought I'd make you feel better with my insane electrical issues
