okay here it is, ive been reading forum after forum search after search and still im pondering. My car overheats in heavy traffic and idle. i changed my power steering fluid due to the fact that it was junk fluid, and i just put new radiator fluid in and no change, so i guess i narrowed it down, a/c cycling switch, power steering pump, or even maybe a head gasket(but i checked my oil and its perfect). i dont know if i should just go through the dealership and have them troubleshoot and fix the problem so i dont spend money on things i dont need. anybody have any ideas.

its a 1mz-fe 3.0 v6 1994 es300

It sounds like the cooling fan is not working properly, very common on these cars. Read the attached pdf and try the test. It will show of most of the common failures of this system, are working or not. There is still a couple components that are not covered with this test though.

georgejet 's guidance is on the right path. also, you should be able to see if the fans is moving at the normal speed ... is it?

"aybe a head gasket(but i checked my oil and its perfect)." this is total excretion, who told you the head gasket is good only if your oil is perfect?

btw, head gasket and other stuff is going to fail from overheating. if you really are overheating, and not just getting 'hoter' than normal, then expect some hefty repairs. AL-alloy block and heads are not resilient to this .

On top of the power steering pump if you reach in from the top is a plug. The most common issues with overheating seems to be this coming unplugged and the fan not running on high whatsoever.

If you search this site you will find thats usually the culprit. I couldnt believe it either till I stuck my fat fingers down there and found the loose plug. Now I don't go past half way on my temp gauge even with the air on! Mines a 92, I hope it's the same concept....

everyone talks about the same thing on here without knowing what they are talking about it seems, why not look at how the system works and find out what the sensors actually do or doesn't anyone have the brains to think of that including so clled experts on here, makes me laugh at the things people say when they don't have any idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if you bother to look at how things work and actually do something ,its as easy as disconnecting the sensor at the thermostat housing on the side of the motor and the fan will run continually which will cause no harm except keep the motor cool and if you are still worried then remove the centre of the thermostat but not the whole thermostat so the coolant flows without restriction

how can changing the cars fluids fix an overheating car and why do people talk about a head gasket thats blown, it can be very hard to detect what the real cause is unless you actually do some work and figure out how the system works, the fan is hydraulic and run off the power steering pump through an electric solenoid that is controlled by an ecu( engine control unit) which is behind the glovebox but thats usually ok , its the sensors on the motor that can give trouble, the sensor near the thermostat housing on the front side of the motor governs when the solenoid opens to let more fluid through which ,if its not working all you need to do is disconnect it and the fan will run continually

yes I realise that and in all the so called threads on the subject I never seen one person actually fix the problem and no one actually knew what or how the system worked which is a bit sad when people start talking garbage

it would be nice if the ones that gave advice knew what they were talking about instead of trying to make out they know something and offering useless information or saying some pretty stupid things, but then again there are a lot of people that know absolutely nothing about the 2nd most important asset they will own
