Mayday Mayday 99 es

Ive got a big problem here. Replaced many sensors on the vehicle thinking that was the problem but im convinced now that its more than that. Ive replaced the 2 upstream o2 sensors, MAF, 2 knock sensors, all the belts and now im ready to give up. I just replaced the knock sensors today and the car was fine for the whole day untill i drove it home tonight. When I was up to speed and than decellerating to stop the gears would shft hard through the low gears! When i got to the house i put it in neutral and the rpm's started to race, than i put it in park and thought the car was going to explode the rpm's got so high so i shut the car off and here we are. Please help me out im very dissapointed right now, so much money has been put in this car with no progress HELP!!

WHY did you repalce the O2 sensors and knock sensors? Was your CEL on for those? Is your CEL on now?

zealexus Jul 17, 2009 07:56 PM

yes i had each code on but they werent on all at once, fixed one thing than something else would go wrong. No the cel and trac off are both off now.

Now it sounds liek your throttle cable, or the butteyfly in the throttle body is sticking. It can also be (rare, but happenes), the cruise control unit sticking to, since the throttle cables goes there too. 1st I'd check all the cables and make sure they slide back and forth with ease. If so, then I'd make sure the cruise control unit moves with no issues. 3rd thing is I;d take the throttle body off and clean it. Most liekly it is the throttle body butterfly sticking due to excessive oil/carbon buildup. It;s quite common. I cleaned one out on a '99 I4 camry earlier this year that was sticking as well.

where is the throttle body butterfly located?

ASG14 Jul 18, 2009 01:19 PM

Inside the throttle body.......

Tps problem ????

I may be mistaken but it sounds like a throttle position sensor. May be called something other than TPS but I have had many experiences when I worked at used dealerships some years back with other cars that had the same symptoms. Ended up needing a TPS....maybe
