Default ES 300 Check Engine diagnostic help

Hi, Thank you to those wo are reading this. I just noticed my check engine light came on after starting back up my car. Simultaneously the TRAC OFF light came on as well. Havent had a chance to get a disgnostic yet but i heard this is common to have both go off. Any indicators of what might be the issue, a simple sensor or something more. any advice or experience with this would be greatly appreciated.

My guess is that it is one of possibly 3000 things.

Don't waste money and time guessing. Find someone that knows what they are doing with the proper tooling and get it fixed right the first time.

Spend your money and time where you get the best result.

Go to Autozone if they are near by, and have them do a code scan free of charge. This will at least point you to the general area of where the problem may reside. Further proper diagnostics will than be required to pinpoint the cause.

If your car is still running well, than my GUESS is that it may be evaporative/Emission system related. But you will need to retrieve the codes to confirm.

In the interim, check your gas cap, make sure it's closed tightly, as that can also cause the CEL to come on.

Peter, OBD I Codes are only applicable to Cars made prior to 1996. Cars manufactured as of 1996 and up, use the OBD II Code system. This is a totally different system. The only way to retrieve these codes is with an OBD II Code Reader/ Scanner.

Attempting anything else, such as inserting jumper wires, or paper clips into the diagnostic terminal of a 1996 and up car as you suggested, will likely damage the Engine Computer, or at the very least blow a fuse. The car in question is an '2000 ES300. Hence an OBD II car.
