1991 ES250 compressor problem?

I bought this car last April from an old guy in my neighborhood for $3,000 with a mere 47,000 miles on it. Seemed in good shape at the time and had a mechanic check it out.

The alternator belt broke the other night driving it home. I'm NOT a car guy so i took it to the nearest Lexus dealership and they are telling me it needs the A/C compressor, Clutch , Reciever Dryer and Belt replaced:
Parts and Labor would be $1,797.25

A second place tells me: The issue that happened with the vehicle was the A/C compressor seized, that has to be replaced in order to replace the belt, the A/C compressor has the belt connected to it and that runs the alternator also so you need the A/C compressor and the clutch and all the parts unfortunately.

Is there a way to bypass the A/C compressor with a different belt to run the alternator? Does this make any sense? How scr#wed am I? I don't need A/C in the winter...I just need a car to run 5 miles each day to and from work. Any help or insight would be GREATLY appreciated. I live in Salt Lake City if you know of any good places to take the car or if this is something I could fix myself with a little bit of patience and determination?

Also...if anyone wants to outright buy it if they know how to fix it, make an offer. I'm open to ideas.
