I heard it was easy to change the part. And the cost of the part isn't that bad. Its only $100 cnd, which is probably like $60 US. Installation is what costs the most. I do not recommend doing it yourself if you have no background in automotive mechanics.

I did one for a 94 Camry a while back(same as the ES), and I hated it, vowed never to do it again. My 92 right axle is blown, and I am going to just pay someone to do it.

I concur on the price, you should be able to get a rebuilt axle for around $60 ~70 us. The issue is installing it, generally it really helps to have a good impact wrench to remove the center axle nut, (sometimes it is the only way). Then if the axle sticks in the wheel hub you would need a good puller, (or some very careful raps with a hammer). Then most of the times the axle can be easily poped out of the trans (of course sometimes you need a slide hammer to get a stuborn one out). The upshot is, yes 9 out of 10 times, a person with a decent toolbox can do it in their garage (if they have mechanical background). it's that tenth time that can really ruin the afternoon. I have seen axles that have just plain refused to come out of the trans no matter what we did (with the car on a lift).

Ps if it is the outer joint, and the axle doesn't want to come out of the trans. You could pop off the c clip, and slide the outer joint off, slide the new joint and clip back on. Not the best way, but in a pinch it will get you back on the road without breaking you bank account.

$300 bucks installed is A LOT. you should be getting it done for ~$150 to $200 MAX installed.

Call around is my best advice.. pep boys? (i don't know if they sell those there, we don't have those in Canada...)
