Default Dead rear speakers

1995 ES300

Been almost two years, but I finally noticed that both my rear speakers are silent. They are unresponsive to any of the dashboard audio controls.

Any suggestions for where to fault-trace? Any plugs that routinely get knocked loose?

I sure love the silence of the car and the excellence of the sound system. I'm an authentic hi-fi aficionado (electrostatic speakers, for example) and am truly impressed by the Lexus sound.

Many thanks.

The rear speakers are blown (same thing happened to my car)
I just replaced them with aftermarket pioneer 3-way speakers (6x9).

Chances are the speakers are blown, but I would check them before replacing. Disconnect the wires and substitue a known good speaker. There could be problems with the wiring or the amp.

Thanks for the good, plausible suggestions. With lousy wet weather here, took me a while to crawl into my dark trunk.

I gave each of the two rear shelf speakers a test with a c-cell battery and they clicked nicely. Then I turned on the radio, FM and AM, and they worked just fine when I twisted the fader control to the rear and wiggled the balance **** side to side.

Sooo, either the battery fixed it, fooling with the wires in the dark helped, or my initial diagnosis was faulty (although I am pretty careful guy and know about electronics).

Beats me. Any thoughts appreciated.

Update:

Sometimes the rear speakers work and sometimes I can't hear anything from them.

Could it be the source/sound/format that influences whether anything is playing back there?
