Is there an updated version of this thread? I can't see any of the pictures, so it's rather hard just to go off the text.

I have a 1999 Lexus ES300 throwing P0441 P0446 and P1155

Does anyone know on average how much it would cost to get this fixed?

Replace fuel cap first, usually worn one will leak and computer will detect it and turn on CEL
Also when screwing on fuel cap make sure you screw it on tight, I usually make sure it clicks 5-6 times as I turn it.

I have a 2002 ES300. Engine code is P0440. I methodically have changed almost all of the vacuum lines and put two different new gas caps on (one aftermarket, one directly from Lexus). Same code after a couple of days of driving. I would like to check and replace the vacuum lines to the charcoal canister, but don't know where it is. Anyone have a exploded view of where it is located?

Had the P0446 code for a long time, and just did this job on my 99 ES300. It was not fun! Jacked up the back of the car, and had 4 jacks underneath, (so I'm paranoid). The 99 charcoal canister, CC, is directly under the trunk, above the rear axle; there is not very much room to work.

I work slowly and methodically on this car, and made a few drawings of the hose layout. I thought the electrical connectors would be hard to disconnect and the vacuum hoses would be easy; it was the opposite! 2 electrical connectors, 3 rubber hoses, and one plastic hose with an unusual plastic connector I've never seen before. One of the rubber connectors was on super tight; that one took about a half hour to finally disconnect, just brutal... Lots of pushing with a lever. Happily, hoses came clean off with no plastic barbs broken inside.

2 hints for this job; I made myself a little pile of pillows as a head rest, just to be able to rest my head as I lay underneath and worked underneath the car. It helped having head/neck support to be able to see and maneuver under the car. I was sore for a couple days afterwards...

Poster ZAJAC had a good tip to disconnect the exhaust fittings. This needs to be done to gain access for space to remove the CC out the exhaust side of the car; won't come out driver side!
It helped to have different lengths of extenders for the various sockets, and those CV type offsets are completely necessary to have. There is really no straight shot to get to one of the two 14mm bolts holding the CC otherwise. The CC is approx. 16 x 6 x 4 inches.

I bought the whole CC from a parts sponsor here, around $375 delivered. For the 99-01, Toyota part number 774006093 emission system, emmision components, vapor canister. I've had the CEL on for close to 2 years, and had to replace the CC for state emissions test. After driving the car for a week, no CEL! Replacing the gas cap didn't clear the CEL.

Hope this helps!

Thanks MRV.

Actually if I had more time I would have attempted that. I ended up bringing my 2002 ES300 to my local garage and they diagnosed the CEL as being due to the charcoal canister. I told them to replace it. They also replaced a sensor or two and all the hoses. Unfortunately the canister as a Lexus dealer item . . . $$$ . So all said and done the whole effort cost me $1200. The CEL is off and I just passed emissions..

And you are correct, I put three different gas caps on and it didn't cure the problem.

Well, MPack, that was a spendy visit to the Lexus dealer, but sometimes you have to bite the bullet! I'd be curious what sensors they changed. What's nice about the Lexus CC is that everything needed is included; all hoses, etc.

Surprising to me, the Lexus/ Toyota part was less expensive than an aftermarket alternative from that large online parts site. For things like that, I prefer the Lexus part, or an OEM like Denso.

Happily enough, the new CC seems to be working fine for me. No CEL to scare me, yet...

Best of luck with your new CC!

4 months later, and no return of the CEL. I'm actually surprised how much better the MPG has become; ballpark 21 MPG to 25-26, no difference in daily trek.

5 years(!) after my post on this thread, no return of the codes. The Charcoal Canister cured the problem. I have read elsewhere that, when refueling, squeezing extra fuel after the first gas pump shutoff results in a overloaded CC, hence the problem codes.

Default P0446

God, I hope it's only the gas cap. My son's '99 ES 300 threw a P0300, 301 303 305, and whatever the oil control solenoid code is. Along with the P0446. Quick replace of the bank 1 oil control valve got rid of the misfires, but I'll get the new gas cap today.

If you are very lucky, it will be the gas cap.

I was not so lucky!

Like you, replacing the OCVs happily cured the 030X codes.

Best of luck with the remaining 0446.

Clear the code and see if it comes back. I've been seeing the P0446 come and go on my car for years. It usually throws a light once every year or two, so I clear it and wait for the next time. No drivability issues, passes emissions/inspections without any issues.

Yeah, that code has been there off and on for a while now, but i need to smog/transfer the title. Of course it is at the worst possible time.
