Is the A/C light blinking when it doesnt work?
You may just need to add more refrigerant. If the light is blinking then the a/c compressor might have seized.

no, the light does not blink, just works sometimes and it's cold but not too cold. Do i need to go to dealer or can I just add some refrigerant myself? I have done it before.

You probably have a sticking expansion valve. My 94 ES had this same type problem several years ago, and the problem was solved by replacing the expansion valve.

This is a very common problem on the early to mid-90's ES models. It has been discussed numerous times on this forum. Do a search to get more information.

interesting. well, the afternoon issue is because there is more heat in the cabin, less efficiency from the condensor in the afternoon because its hotter and sunnier outside than it is in the morning.

the expansion valve could cause this, improper r134 charge, compressor problems, condensor fan inoperable, very hot AND / OR humid day, and lack of vehicle movement [just idling] --> which matters more for the hot AND / OR humid days, and last and somewhat least is ice or condensation build up.
