Timing Belts

Just wondering if anyone knows why with Canadian cars we're told 100,000 kilometers for belt life, where as American belts are rated to 90,000 miles, or about 145,000 km. Are they the same belt? Looking into picking up a 94 ES, just trying to figure out what I'll have to put into it right off the bat, or if I can let the belt go for a bit and get a deal.

Thanks guys,

kev

P.S. Im a Canadian

Edit: And by the way, nice site. Helped sway me towards my first Lexus purchase. Already downloaded the FSM and I dont own the car yet :)

Well I don't believe there is a difference in the belt but maybe the weather factors in there somehow...

Timing belt composition was changed in late '98 and the timing belt change went from 60 to 90,000 miles.

its more of the law requiring the part to last a certain amount of miles. same goes for california. same part, just that it needed to meet regulations so they claimed it was better.

I guess I can get another 30k miles out of my belt without worry then. Thanks for the replies.

you're taking a chance past 60k , but a great chance past 120K. on these cars with noninterferece, i would say do it at 120k... if you have the later 3.0 with interfering valves/pistons, then do it at about 90 to 100 K miles to be on safe side

I wont go past 90k miles, theres no reason to risk it, and I should do all the other maintenance I can at that time. At the moment its under 90k kilometers, which is under 60k miles, so if a belt is a belt, no point spending money right away that I really don't need to.
