When I bought mine yesterday I filled up with Regular, mainly just because I was strapped for cash after I left the dealership, but I will probably be filling up with Premium from now on.

Oh and I have a 1999 ES300.

I've always put premium in my car. So at least 91 octane, I didn't know before recently but now I am going to stick with Top Tier (Shell, Chevron, etc.)

I calculate my mileage after each fill up on ALL my vehicles and log it.
I use 87 octane on my '98 and my mothers '97, and the last check I got 23.2 mpg
with 90% city and 10% hwy driving on 1 tank. 2 short highway runs. I'm NEVER on the hwy.

Using premium gas in an engine designed to run on regular doesn't improve performance.
A common understanding that may apply in only limited circumstances amongst petrol consumers is that adding a higher octane fuel to a vehicle's engine will increase its performance and/or lessen its fuel consumption; this may be false under most conditions — while engines perform best when using fuel with the octane rating for which they were designed and any increase in performance by using a fuel with a different octane rating is minimal or even imaginary,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating

to further that, the recommended fuel BY LEXUS is 87 octane, and 91 for "High performance"
High Performance meaning if you're putting added strain on your engine like racing, or driving
through mountainous terrain, you would use premium. The average flat land commute.....worthless.

it should be fine, they're both gasoline. I think I heard somewhere that the mid grade is just 50/50 mix of reg and premium.

Premium grade (91 octane in CA) from either Chevron or Mobil. In a pinch, I'll probably visit a Shell. First time I filled up I went to Arco...

Default 93 For Me

While the handbook for my 98 ES 300 says it is Ok to use 87 grade, the last time I tried to go that route I got nothing but trouble--knocking, lurching, choking, you name it. Then when I got it to the shop, the repairman said the cheap grade fuel had fouled the plugs, and I ended up replacing them (not cheap).
Ever since then I've used 93 grade, mostly Hess, sometimes Shell, always $$$$$, but worth it. Engine has 204,000 miles one it, fixed two valves in December, getting about 25 MPG.

the first sentence clearly states;premium unleaded. And regular if premium not available.Thats kind of a no brainer.

I just tried using premium for the first time in my 97' a few days ago because the manual clearly doesn't even go as far as to reccomend premium, just says "for improved performance". So, I said **** it, it's all over 4 a gallon anyway, and I have to say it ran and idled ever so slightly smoother, and my mileage was better than my yearly average by over 2 mpg. I'm still not convinced though, more testing is in order...... This was 93 octane by the way, and I did not reset the ecu.

you are a fin moron
manual says to use 91 for people at sea level, unless its not available!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you're messing up your engine eveytime, and the ECU is correcting for it, but the damage still occurs everytime it has to get you going or on heavy load

that damage is horrible. who knows how long your engine will last

lexus parts/service dept makes fun of their own customers and their very uninformed nature when it comes to cars and maintenace. Its says use 91. it says use 91. you bought a lexus. still, you MAKE UP YOUR OWN SCIENCE that says you can use 87 based on the "what-the-heck, why not use 87" theory and mention saving money. WOW

freedom to express myself freedom to feel freedom to be myself like you morons
