I have had this problem for years now and am just getting to the bottom of it. The light on the shifter has been out for a while now and someone told me that the bulb was blown. How do I get to the bulb that lights the shifter assy? I have a 97 ES. I also have a light out on my seat heater switch. If at all possible, can anyone provide me with p/n's for the bulbs so I can order them from Lexus? Thanks!
For the shifter light, try lightly knocking the plastic plate where the letters P,R,N,D,2,L are. It's possible that the bulb is loosely connected. It's happened to me before in my '01 ES, so try that knocking method first and see what happens.

yes to open the center console, simply remove the heated seat switches pby pulling them up and then just slide your index finger under the wood dash and pull upwards from both sides (the bottom right and bottom left) this should remove the center console. I did this to remove some debris i had that had fallen under the lining of the trim. Hope this helps thanks!

I love this website. Thanks a lot! I am going to work on this on Saturday.

Yeah, there's a little bulb down there that you simply change, but i have no idea what the bulb is.
Thanks everyone for all of your input. I have successfully changed the bulb and this $4.00 that was invested in it could have been done years ago. By the way, I tried to take the bulb to pepboys, radio shack, and autozone and neither one of them had it. So I got it from the dealership. Thanks again guys!!
