quick general question about CV joints...
Hi all...I did a search for this but couldn't find much...
I have a pretty minor rip on my drivers side CV joint boot on my 92 es300 with 138,000 miles...
now...I just noticed it and was wondering if I could pack it with some grease and then seal it with some type of adhesive....
of course I ran this by the "family" mechanic and he looked at me as if I were crazy and that I should pay him $270 to replace the entire joint becuase MAYBE the joint is bad...
I then asked about replacing the boot itself and he said that he could ruin the joint trying to get the boot off...
any help would be amazing...

It's best to replace your cv boots since they are rubber, they will crack and dry rot over time. If you've driven too long with the CV boots leaking grease, you may have to replace both drive axles. At that time, it would be best if you go with a remanufactured set instead of new ones. Reman. axles are expensive...imagine what new ones are. But yeah, if the cv joints are clicking, then you have no choice but to replace them.

there isn't any clicking....its fine...the rip just happened and the car had been sitting for a month while I was away....maybe two weeks of driving with a rip and I kept putting grease into the boot to keep it lubed up....
do you think the price he gave me was for remanufatred ones? $270?
