Question Self-restoring coat on 2014+ CTs?

The manual mentions that 2014 and 2015 CTs (I went back and check 2011 through 2013, no mention of it) has a self-restoring coat, a clear coat top layer that "self heals" any minor scratches. This is something Infiniti tried in 2008 and discontinued because it wasn't working well enough (I had one and I never noticed it working), and I think they now use it on the GT-R. This is the only other instance I've heard of this technology being used a production car. I know that the paint protection film I use has it as well (and it has no minor scratches on it, which I guess means it's probably working).

I haven't seen any evidence of swirl marks or minor scratches ever going away. Has anyone seen any evidence of this coat working?

Here's a copy of the 2014 manual stating it:

On the 2014s at least, I believe the only self-healing paint color available was Redline (which partly explains my own decision to get one, instead of black). That being said, it's one of those things that is probably impossible to really test or detect - but still nice to know it's there!

How do you know that? Wouldn't the manual mention this?

You know, on second thought, it might be applied to all of the paint colors. I had originally read about it in a press release a while back, but the language is a bit vague about whether or not redline was just a new color or it exclusively had the self-restoring paint: http://pressroom.lexus.com/releases/...0h+pricing.htm

First of all, thank you for posting the press release. Upon reading it, it does seem like Redline is the only color with the coat, but you'd think Lexus would have not included the info in the manual, instead including it in a separate piece of paper or card given to anyone who buys a Redline car.

I'm going to call Lexus and see if I can get a more clear answer on this.

Called Lexus today. They confirmed that Redline was the only color that got the special clear coat. Maybe that's why it was new for 2014.

It's only a matter of time before this technology is offered in commercially available clearcoats.

Interesting.
