Question Gas Tank not empty when gauge says so!

Just had 5000 mile service. Gas gauge indicates empty and range indicats 20 miles or less, yet when I fill the tank it takes just 8 gallons (out of a rated capacity of 12). Service guy says, as I expected, "that's normal, they all do that". Extra points to him for making up a new Federal regulation that says compact cars (!) must have substantial reserves when registering empty, but, really, one-third of the tank? Any other experience with this?

Same thing happens on mine. Although mine was about 8.7 gallons and the light went on. Wish it was a little more accurate.

Every car does do that... its just how it is... most cars will show empty with 3-5 gallons remaining, the light turning on with 2-4 gallons remaining...

He said it because he sees it and hears it all the time...

also engine won't start if it runs out of gas... the electric motor will malfunction, so this is a precautionary thing that's implemented.

anyways how about you drive it for those extra 3-4 miles and let us know how it goes...

I'd be pretty nervous if my car's fuel light came up at two gallons left - because if you're in the middle of nowhere... good luck!

Interesting - every car I have owned always came extremely close to calculating how many miles until the tank is empty. This one just happens to be way off in calculating how long it take to get to empty. Must be ultra conservative.

That is one disadvantage of this car so far, while the gas mileage is really good, the tank is so small that you have to fill up more often than other cars I have owned.

My 2010 Prius was the same way. Since the power train is essentially the same, I'm not surprised that the fuel management systems are probably the same too.

The only difference that I've noticed is that I get fewer total miles to the tank - so I don't "push" it as far as I did with the Prius. I try to fill up at ~400 mile mark if I'm in town and less chancy if I'm on the highway.

It is normal. i don't have a CT, but i have an IS. The gas light comes on with about 30 miles of range left. And when the range says 0, there's still about 2 gallons left in the tank as reserve.

So the fuel light comes on when you have 3 gallons of gas left in the tank.....you know that you can go at least 100 miles and probably at least 120 miles assuming 40 mpg. I figure at 80 mph I should get at least 38 mpg which is still well over 400 miles per tank. Maybe you need more info....but I am fine with a 3 gallon warning.
