Default Camping/backpacking in Socal?

im starting to get into camping and backpacking. Been piecing my gear together n stuff.. got myself a Nemo OBI 2p tent, messkit, etc n soon ill get a pack.

now..

wheres a good place to go that doesnt require a permit or a day pass? I want to go to a national Forest since they allow firearms to be carried or at least its not frowned upon.

looking for:
-somewhere in socal
-water source preferred
-shaded via tall trees
-firearm friendly (not entirely for shooting but more for protection)
-not too far from socal

any help would be awesome!

Forest Falls is a cool place out by big bear, also Indian Canyon ot by palm springs, go to seven sisters waterfalls cool hike huge oasis, some shade, cliff diving etc! heres a video on youtube (and no this isnt my video or me in that sweet speedo!) lol also you may want to check by calling that the water is flowing!

http://www.palmsprings.com/points/canyon/

a little further then socal but the coolest 10 mile hike and camoing the horse back out but Havasupai indian reservation at the grand canyon is a really cool weekend trip!

and my most recent hike at Zion National Park (also not socal but a must see at some point) its called the subway and they only let so many people per day down so reservations a must!

None of these are my vids!

Im going to Zion in a few weeks to hike The Narrows, 12 miles through the water in the canyon! one of the best hikes in the U.S. - I did Machu Picchu in Peru a couple months ago - awesome experience - hiking the summit of Mount Baldy in the Snow is actually a lot of fun!! Mt Wilson bottom to top and back is about 17 miles, thats a fun day - lol i did that one with only one bottle of Gatorade, didn't bring my pack cause I didn't expect to go all the way to the observatory that day lol, oh well, i did just fine!

I am always down to hike anywhere - PM me or start a thread to get some guys to come out, should be fun

Ya totally cool places! make sure you call the palm springs one to make sure water for seven sisters is flowing! Ya you do have to pay fee's but they arent that much...i think the palm springs one is only like $12.00 per car load! forest falls i think you just buy a $5 day pass, theres also Lydle creek just like 3 exits past Victoria gardens and theres water and water falls right off the road

I'm jealous Zion was a blast we only had a short time to go and get back so we left on a friday night got there sat at 2am then slept till 8am hiked the subway unitl 9pm lol then drove home( only an 800 mile drive round trip in a little over 24hrs) ! Make sure you get reservations we did it with out the permit and got busted lol....DO THE SUBWAY Hike and make sure you bring atleast 80Ft of good rope!

EDIT: Do a Cruise/ Hike day!
