i have been to the one in newport twice. first time was on those 99 bucks for 2 deal or so. it wasn't as pleasant. 2nd time was for my wife's bday. it was fabulous (let's just say i was able to communicate with the business owner before going there)

overall i think they are ok. a bit on the crowded side unless you are able to make reservation and tell them you want a quieter area. food and service are decent. price are on the high side, but it's fine dining so what do you expect. imho it's not too bad already, not when compared to places like mastro's. but then again i think food at mastro's are better

for french, i have been to cellar in fullerton, fantastic place. i have also been to pascal in newport beach (they just opened a second location). it's pretty good too

if you are on yelp, you can look up my reviews (you know my name )

is it for special occasions?

Thanks guys. We're looking to give a gift certificate for a modest OC restaurant. I didn't realize that Flemmings was on the noisier side...was thinking a bit more quiet but not one of the "romantic" type places.

Rominl's mention of Pascal is
Mastro's looks... I didn't see prices listed, what would we be looking at in terms of a appetizer, main course, dessert and a glass of wine?

prices of mastros can skyrocket pretty easily. really depends on what you order for each course. prices of steak can vary quite a bit. also since steaks are just that, steak, you will need to order sides. lobster mashed potato is great but it's also a good 30-40 bucks. but their sizes are no joke, the mashed potato, it's for 3-4 people.

last time my wife and i went (and she was pregnant so we couldn't eat as much so we shared the steak. i ordered wine, she didn't of course) and it was something like 150+tips i think. so you can get the idea

and for comparison, last time we went to fleming's, wife wasn't pregnant so we ate more, and also with wine for both, and came out to around 130?

in terms of ambiance, mastro's is far better for sure. i don't know what others think, but first time we were at fleming's it was pretty noisy from all the tables, and a lot of "traffic" around us too. 2nd time we got seated at a private room, and it was a totally different experience

ruth's always pretty good, i like them a lot, especially for the price. i would say mastro's are better and also better ambiance, but it's not a linear curve if you know what i mean
