Default Do Not Brake Into a Pothole? Why Details Inside.

http://autos.aol.com/article/pothole-tips

If you’re going to hit a pothole, don’t brake into it
This is probably the most unorthodox piece of advice we've received about potholes so far, but it stands to reason.

“It can actually increase damage," said White. "Get off the brakes the moment before you hit and let the car absorb the blow.”

When you brake heavily, your car tends to nose dive. When you let off the brake, the car rocks back and you have more suspension travel over the front wheels. This is a good thing when you're going to do some crater exploring on your favorite road.

pothole tips - since our rodes are being jacked up due to the rain.

funny u brought this thread up. I hit a huggge pothole on Vermont/11th and my car got rocked. And yes, I did a "panic brake". Luckly i escaped damage free. I find myself driving 20 mph and staring at the ground.

Same goes for a motorcycle.

If there is an obstacle on the road, give it gas.

Pop a wheelie.

That way, you "jump" over it, rather than nose-dive into it...

if we don't hit that brake, isn't that gonna give more "pressure" to the rims/tires ? that means, the bigger chance it might damage the rims ?

That's why air escapes from a bead when you hit a pothole....Lower quality wheels will bend...

But you should slow down for one but not brake into it,(let off the brakes when you're about to hit it).

you hit brakes before hitting the pothole, but right before you hit, let go of brakes and let the weight rock to the back, that will reduce the "weight" up front. the wheels are going to get hit regardless, might as well give it the most travel possible and hope for the best.

i thought this is nothing new anymore. but i agree most people tend to brake into the pothole. after experiencing it few times in the very beginning with big wheels, i have learned to basically just brake and let go and hope for the best. when braking into potholes, i felt significantly harder hit

i like how everyone is taking this foo's advice off of AOL for real....

haha, jk. everything he says is true. the #1 fault of any driver is late braking, which includes dragging brakes into a turn/pothole/animals/pedestrians/etc..

hahhaa pedestrians, lol...

but it's true, i see people braking so hard into obstacles, the nose dive so much it's like they are actually trying to get their cars to kiss on the 'stuff"
