Celebrate the weekend before at a nice restaurant. Avoid paying extravagant prices for so-so food on the day of.

OutlawsX 02-05-07 04:28 PM

I'll celebrate on that weekend of 17-18. It's cheaper, and without all the hassle. Perhaps try brunch at The Reef.

I don't make enough money to just get any place in LA on Valentines, and trully be a baller. A friend spent 2g's last year on a night at a fancy shmancy restraunt in LA... I'll pass.

If a lady "expects" $90 roses, and $250 dinners, I'd tell her to pay for it.

We're celebrating on the 13th, instead of the 14th.

At a lot of "fancy" restaurants, you're stuck w/ a prix fix menu. And the going rate for this menu is around $100 - $120 per person. That is easily a $200+ meal for A SINGLE DAY!!!

We are going to CUT, but on the 13th. It just doesn't make sense to pay TWICE AS MUCH per person when their regular menu is just as nice, food is just as good, and the ambience is the same.

If you want to save some money, I'll post my rack of lamb recipe. It is soooo easy, you'll laugh. Couple that w/ a basic side dish...and the whole meal is around...$30 tops. It's healthy, looks nice, and gives you brownie points for effort.

Toss in some wine or champagne at the end if you want...to set the mood. haha.

Rack of lamb recipe:

1 rack of lamb. Approximate size is 8 ribs (4 ribs per person). (This will run around $20)
Prehead over to 350 degrees.
Season w/ a lot of black pepper, some creole seasoning for a bit of spice, some Lawry's Grillmates - Montreak Steak seasoning, a dash of cayenne pepper, and a splash of soy sauce. (Do this to both sides of the rack of lamb). You can add rosemary too, but I find it doesn't add enough flavor...it seems a bit hard to really break the flavor of the rosemary into the meat. Anyways...
After that, place rack of lamb rib side down in a cooking pan (I use a large glass Pyrex dish). (Just as a note, you may want to line the pan w/ foil, as it makes for easy cleanup)
Cook for 25 minutes.
When done, take out it and cut the individual ribs apart and serve.

Optional side dishes:

Bed of spinach - Pick up baby spinach package ($5). Wash clean. Put on plate and drizzle sesame ginger dressing on top. (You can cover the entire plate w/ this and place the rack of lab directly on top). The combination of sweetness from the ginger dressing and the saltiness from the meat is a good combo.

Corn - I use 2 ears of white corn ($0.79 each). I cut the kernals of the cob, and put them directly in a pot. Toss in a bit of margarine, just don't add too much...enough to help the corn from sticking/burning. I use a tablespoon I think. I use Smart Balance buttery spread as it is healthier. Add black pepper, and some seasoning used for BBQ meat (Lawry's Grillmates - Montreal Steak flavor). Again, a dash of cayenne pepper for taste and color. The corn cooks fast.

Both of these side dishes can easily be done while the rack of lamb is cooking.

In fact, I'm cooking rack of lamb tonight. Will see if I can take pictures (if my camera isn't broken).

And yes, this meal is easily under $30 provided you already have some basic spices to work with.

We celebrate early. Service on major eat-out days are :thumbdn: often times. The manager of a 4 star restaurant told us come in a day earlier if you don't mind a slightly different menu. YMMV

Jay...head up the road to this place. Fantastic food that is a great value:$. We leave the place about $130 or so with appetizer, wine (by glass) and dessert.
