Golf instruction around OC?

Any recco's for a good golf instructor to cover the basics in the OC area?

Mike, I let you know as soon as Jennifer's mom in town. She's almost "pro", you know ....
I never held a golf club in my life, but enjoy driving those Golf cart with NOS !! heehee....

Let me ask Jennifer, maybe she can give you few lessons !!

This is part of Junko's brother's X-mas gift. He got some tips at Taste and discovered "wow...a few points made some changes." We figured to get him a session or two depedning how much $$. Maybe get a certificate for a round or 9 holes.

Right now I got some callaway x18 or 16 knockoffs. works great, along with a Cleveand 400 launcher and an odyssey dfx 2ball putter. But damn, I suck in gold. lol.

Very good swing, only fault I see is that you pass parallel like phil mickelson. We all have faults and mine is sometimes I not start the swing with my lower body and also let my hips start the downswing.

I'll post up my bag tomorrow. :)

Nice to see some golfers. :)

When talking to instructors, are there any particular questions I'd want to ask to help me in deciding which one to choose over another?

TIA

one thing comes to mind.....make sure they will work around your swing, not try to change your whole entire swing.

That's if your an experienced golfer, it's really hard to suddenly change a swing completely. As a beginner, I would follow what the instructor has to say and then start applying it to the swing. If for some reason, the beginner is unable to do certain movements in the golf swing, then the swing should be based on what the beginner is capable of doing.

After Tiger Woods won the masters about 5 years ago, he changed his swing and in 01, he poured it on. It's just a matter of the level and dedication you want to put yourself through to get to the next level.

Just so others will know, having an instructor is like taking medicine lil by lil. One lesson is about the grip, stance, alignment. Next one would be take away, half swings,... it's a long process but well worth it.

I have taken lessons from Bob Silver a golf pro at Old Ranch Practice Center in Seal Beach. He is very good teaching the fundamentals and has reasonable rates.

RA40 12-01-05 01:45 AM

Ah...my next question...what kind of rates are typical?

The going rate is usually 30-35.00 for a half hour lesson. Group lessons are alot cheaper because they teach about 5 people along with yourself in 6 sessions for roughly 150-200.00.

Butch Harmon, Tiger's former coach charges 500 an hour.

Good info guys...time to make some calls and see.

We were talking about making it a mini vacation for him by having him get some instruction up in Solvang at the Alisal River course. Maybe give him a couple lessons, green fees and what not. Dunno if this is a nice course but we often eat that the glub restaurant when in town and I think the course looks nice.

Which brings my next question...what courses in LA/OC do you like or would recco a round at?

For a beginner, there is a 18 hole par 3 course in Arcadia that is less than 12.00 for 18 holes. A lot of begginers go there as well as experienced golfers to work on their short games. Majority of the holes are less than 125 yards.

I play alot at Whittier Narrows in Rosemead and my friend is a great instructor who works there. He charges about 200.00 for 5 lessons of 30-45 mins.

b1gredek 12-01-05 09:34 PM

ask for kevin shimanda at hoover,,,,, guarantee he is awesome,, he has package deals which are really reasonable if you purchase three or more lessons... his number is 2356497,,,,, tell him you are larry's buddy,,,,,, or i can call him first for u good luck.....

RA40 12-15-05 01:46 PM

Looks nice B-.

Bro-in-law has had 4 of his lessons and it's been challenging. Not as easy as he thought...I think he needs to get out and play more so the lessons sink in and he feels the difference. Although it could be a ploy to get us to spring for more lessons. ;)

b1gredek 03-17-06 07:25 PM

ra40,,, how did the lessons go......... for the gift,,,,,, was the instructor as good as i said he was
