4 way stop intersections vs intersections where there are only 2 stop signs meaning the perpendicular traffic has right of way is too complex of a concept for apparently most drivers in SoCal today. Frequently, drivers who are required to stop slow to a roll and then proceed regardless of right of way traffic.

Or, how about at an intersection where the traffic lights are out and flashing red in all directions. It becomes a free for all.

What about roundabouts? My 15-year old, who understands well how they work and has no trouble navigating them, is consistently amazed watching full-grown adults just stop functioning when they encounter one.

This is bizarre for many. There are signs on the streets and panels right before you enter. Drivers are supposed to slow down and yield those already in circle. Many don't and just fly through. When there are two lanes inside, both can go straight to the other side while only the inner can go around the circle. Many would violate this and go around from the outer lane. I witness too many accidents. My wife got scared and chose to go a longer route to avoid roundabout.

I think we're supposed to treat as four way stop signs. But this morning I just witnessed a BMW () flying through. He might have seen empty on the crossing street and decided to not stop.

I feel like I should be in 1 as when I approach a four way stop sign or traffic light. The turning path is passing through 1 not 2. I also notice majority people would stop in 1. One time recently a dude (in a shiny MB ) stopped next to 1 and stared at me because I didn't go into 2 for him to turn from his moving traffic lane. He must think like you but why stop on the moving traffic lane? He was there before I got to the point. :

So in that situation I agree you should turn into position one, but when coming into a turn like that if there is no other car I always pull wide into position 2. You're totally right in that situation its just not natural to pass the car turning the other way before you turn...and if you have a flow of cars doing the same thing that would be impossible.

What they taught us many years ago, back in Drivers' Ed, was that, absent a controlling red/green light in an intersection, yield to the car to your right.

That would be the correct way, but in practice nobody seems to follow that.

To be clear, we all know how it works.
