I was asleep so no risk there and (know you were joking and would likely head into debate so only answering ) not the type of circumstance you ever should use a firearm.
There is nothing in that link which stops the Chief Postal Inspector from authorizing USPS Letter-Carriers to carry sidearms for protection. Federal Law gives him (or her) that authority.
No person on U.S. Postal Service® property may carry or store firearms, explosives, or other dangerous or deadly weapons, either openly or concealed, except for official purposes.
Except for employees authorized by the chief postal inspector or the inspector general, USPS® employees are prohibited from possessing, carrying, or storing firearms while on duty, either on or off USPS property, and at any time on or within USPS property.
Wife likes to send the grandkids a little money for their birthday until the birthday card got stolen.
Now I tell her not to mail cards anymore and put the money in envelope and make sure can't see the cash when held up to the light.
We're only talking $20 but they look forward to it.

In my book, anybody who would steal $20 intended for a kid, especially a kid from a poor family, deserves to do some jail time.
My health-insurance company now sends out routine mail, particularly claim-related documents, with a double or triple-thickness of added paper in the envelope, to prevent snoop-detectives from doing just that.....holding it up to a bright light. I sometimes use added-thicknesses myself when mailing things.

And, just how many postal delivery personnel do you think have been granted this exemption?

Agree wholeheartedly, and they would do time if caught. The Feds/cops don't screw around with the mail.
Though this thread does make me wonder, why the flags? It does put a mark on you. Can't most post office workers just take the mail? Why does the flag have to be up?

That isn't the point. The point is that more could legally be given......with proper firearms training. In fact, a number of USPS employees are ex-military, and already have firearms training.
And, although it's up to the mods to decide (or to Dave, who started the thread), we might all be getting off-topic.....the identity of that car in the video, and the jerks who drive around like that hitting mail boxes.
Losing a mail key is a serious thing, it gives someone access to basically all mailboxes in an area, they are very carefully guarded. Like we’ve talked about lots of harm can be done to
While I couldn't agree more on the seriousness of screwing with mail, in this situatiion couldn't the locks just get changed immediately?

Yeah, this thread has been off topic shortly after the mystery was solved in the first couple posts. Not much else on topic to discuss.
