We have a guy doing this for the last two months by me. He drives around a late model SUV and hits mail boxes around 3-4 am. His face is all over the Ring network.
People think he's stealing the pre approved credit card mailings than applying and trying to grab the credit cards that come in later. The kicker is he's doing this while wearing Canada Goose and Moose Knuckle winter jackets. I guess crime pays lol.
Neighbor lost a package from the gap, but I think they are primarily looking for financial info for identity theft and checks they can wash and cash
I don't have many paper bills but some I do still prefer paper to going green so I get physical bills, my Amex account number is always hidden minus the last numbers and I'm pretty sure it's like that with most everything else because of people like this. That said, yes, every person on earth needs Lifelock or similar.
If you mean taking credit card checks and trying to use those, they'll have to fingerprint it at the very least when attempting to use it. And you need ID to cash any check. People are so stupid.

no, they wash the amounts and ‘to’ info off of checks they steal and make it out to themselves or someone else. It’s done regularly
also think about tax documents etc that also often get mailed this time of year, plus all the other identifying info about where you work, relatives, account numbers and where you have accounts etc etc.
Good catch, Motorola. I have to agree.....MKZ Hybrid.
We have mailbox-locks in our development precisely for this very reason. The Postal-Carrier has one Master Key to open up the main box for delivery, and we homeowners have an individual key for each slot-address.
Your police-report, Dave (and the reports of your neighbors, if they also make one) will not stop with the local police. Any theft of U.S. Mail is considered a Federal Offense...they will also notify the FBI.

Not as helpful as you might think. Letter carriers are being robbed at gunpoint regularly for those master keys, which are then used to steal mail in bulk.
I think they were after the magazines. JK. Of course they’re after checks, cc and similar stuff. Good eye Motorola! As bad as it is, this is still far better than a break in. I remember reading about a nice expensive SUV circle around a nice gated neighborhood then eventually broke in one of the houses during day time. Glad you didn’t lose anything, Dave. Hope they get them.
What is of value in the mail? Nobody (in general I ever know/knew) sends more than $50 cash in mail. What could possibly be in mailbox of value these days anyway? CCs not activated? Junk mail?
Serious federal crime.
This time of year it's tax related - W2's, etc. showing up that give all kinds of information (SSN, etc) and people also get all other tax related documents from things like investment accounts, etc. which could have account numbers, balances, etc. People will file taxes on your behalf and take the refund check. I went through an insane case of aggravated identity theft about 6 years ago - it lasted 9 months. You wouldn't believe what people are capable of and how many weak links are in every system from banks to credit cards to places like Equifax, etc. designed to protect you with "credit freezes" (which don't work). If someone gets a hold of a utility bill and can make a fake drivers license with your name and info but their picture... I have bad news for you. They're now you and you're going to have to prove who is the "real you".
Kudos to Motorola for the car ID, hope they catch the person.
This is why I love these cameras. I have one above my garage door, a ring doorbell, and three in the backyard, one looking back at each fence gate and one looking out over the deck right above the glass door to the house. These are WELL worth the investment...

Ahh yes good point, had no idea. I just get so much crap in the mail I forget sometimes there is important stuff in there sometimes.
Everyone needs Lifelock or similar. I have so many things that when I get a legit credit alert I get buzzed with like 12 emails that catch it.

Right. I still wouldn't want it but maybe there's an upside to having all the mail apartment style in these newer neighborhoods. I've never had mail problems that I know of.

Oh yeah. Every inch of my property is under surveillance with cameras that see in the dark. When they installed it I moved adjusted one over the garage a bit so I could see the street and catch things like this if they happened to us.

Someone in Toronto recently watched on his ring camera as a home invasion happened while their 13 kid was home. That is how the police were dispatched. These cameras are great. They don't really prevent crime IMO, but they are great to have
