So I'm bored with EVs...
So I was watching all the Lucid Air reviews along with various Tesla Plaid videos lately (the Model X just recently came out) and it hit me. Every single review is the same, they accelerate and go "woahhhh", then they talk about how far they'll go...and then the rest is just generic car. Pretty much every single EV out there is the same, a boring appliance on wheels.
So I had a little rant about it... When are we going to get the enthusiast EV? Where's the LC500 equivalent or the Miata equivalent or the Bronco equivalent (and no, the Hummer EV doesn't count)? |
Which EVs have you driven?

Where's the LC500 equivalent or the Miata equivalent or the Bronco equivalent (and no, the Hummer EV doesn't count)? I like the Ionic 5 and it would be so great if it were hybrid. I just can’t imagine having to charge the damn thing or any EV for the rest of my life. That said, some of the designs are kinda interesting |
I think most younger demographics would probably favor EVs. I cant get myself to like them, they feel weird. Seems like tesla s, 3s and ys are the new camry or accord. Everyone has them, dont good all that great and feel plain. But this is the future, i was watching an old review of LFA and i was thinking sound was one “feel” factor to cars. Which would be no more, its like an extinction happening right before our eyes
Nothing against ev crowd. Elon i think is trying atleast his teslas are quick or we would be stuck with prius like acceleration. |

Quick is just a dumb party trick, I'd rather see an EV that handles incredibly (come on, give me 4 motor torque vectoring magic), or one that was absolutely luxurious (like, why isn't the EQS as nice as a Maybach inside), or one that is cheap and simple (how about a corolla EV)? |
I'm curious how many here that don't like the apparent sterile vibe of an electric vehicle own a car like the GT86 or some other no frills sports car.

If you think Teslas are boring cars, you haven't driven one. They are amazing driver's cars.

i get a weird “off putting” feel to all electric cars that i driven. Tesla model p100 is what i was aiming for brfore buying gsf. Wanted to like it alot.. tried. My friend has one which he let me have it for for few days, although its quick thats about it, interior felt cheap, creaking from dash and not just comfortable. But no gas stations visit is a plus.
eying an model y perf one, lets see i just can’t stand the tesla interiors. My dad had an old stick corolla mid 70s car which i learned how to drive in and i loved driving that thing. a quality electric car (lexus is probably a decade away) and i am willing to wait. Licid does seem promising, and taycaan seems nice too.

I'm not sure I'd call them Drivers' Cars....but they are definitely dragsters. I didn't actually time it, but the Tesla Model 3 I sampled could easily smoke some of the quickest GTOs, Road Runners, Mach-1s, Chevelle SS's, etc......that I grew up with over a half-century ago. To say I got the surprise of my life in the Model 3 would be an understatement. |

I identify with this, I've driven all but the Taycan and while fast 0-60 they can't do much else past that. Same thoughts on quality.
I have a 92 Saturn SL with the gloriously high output of 85 hp. Stick. It's extremely fun to drive for those reasons and how light it is (sub 2000lb) but also terrifying due to the knowledge if anyone hits me I'm dead. I only drive it locally |
For a daily driver they are great cars, not sure how anyone can deny that. They are great appliance cars. The interiors will get better as more auto manufacturers get on board. If I’m looking for a fun weekend car I still go ICE all day every day, more soul, more character and stirs more emotion, plus you can mod them if you want to set yourself apart from similar cars if you are into that.
As for only being a quick 0-60 car, that isn’t true anymore. |
i get this rant. very fast instant acceleration is impressive and not boring, but besides that, there's no EV out there so far that makes me feel "ooh, i want that". they're like a bunch of heavy windows laptops with different screens, speeds, sizes. that doesn't make them 'bad', and each of them has one or more gimmicks, but i don't find any of them special.
that's why i expect my first ev will replace my 'boring' suv for work. my expectations will be low, and it will get the job done. but nothing special. |

The video is pretty biased as all "they've" seen are review videos of people comparing ranges on EVs. He specifically mentions the Throttle House video of the Plaid where all they talk about is the acceleration and braking but neglects to point out the Model 3 Performance video where they hoon it all over the place and praise its handling capability. Pretty much all review videos are the same for all cars..interior, design, performance...blah blah blah.
This reminds me when the Japanese cars started to take share from the market and all the German car guys were saying that the Japanese cars are all appliances without "soul" and "character." Yes some people will find EVs boring but many many others will not. I test drove a bunch of cars before deciding on my EV and chose it because it flat out-handled, out performed, out-braked, and had more "soul" than anything else in its segment by a country mile. You'll feel sentiment is shared by many who have owned M3s, Porsches, and other performance cars on the forums that I frequent that have the same car as me. Sure many won't feel the same but many will...so anyone reading this...take a test drive for yourself and decide whether that EV is boring to you. As with all ICEs, not all EVs are created the same. There is a reason that most people that go EV, don't go back to ICE. |
