Its not "questionable build quality" its just little choices in materials. Honestly the only material in the W223 I don't like is the hard plastic cladding along the top of the carpeting. It won't come across in pictures.
styling of the EQS is definitely odd for mb. not sure if they wanted to achieve specific drag coeff or what. indeed the pic says it all, one is elegant and grand looking, the other one is like an egg, in some way model 3 on steroid

It's because the EQS was designed for the Chinese market first and foremost and this is what Mercedes's research found appeals to Chinese buyers...
The EQS does have a drag coefficient of 0.2 but quite frankly that's not enough to justify the mid-2000s Civic body when the Model S achieves the same figure.
I don't think it has to be one or the other. One good and one bad with no in between. I like 'em both. Different cars, different eras. For the time being at least, there's room for both.
