Ford's upcoming "Blue Oval City"
From alex on autos and C&D:
The folks at Ford had a busy day, announcing plans for an all-new $5.6 billion mega campus in Stanton, Tenn., called Blue Oval City. The campus will create approximately 6,000 new jobs and re-imagine how vehicles and batteries are manufactured. The 3,600-acre campus covering nearly 6 square miles will encompass vehicle assembly, battery production and a supplier park in a vertically integrated system that delivers cost efficiency while minimizing the carbon footprint of the manufacturing process. Joining the Ford electric manufacturing revolution is a planned $5.8 billion, 1,500-acre BlueOvalSK battery manufacturing campus in Glendale, Ky., which is targeted to open in 2025. Twin co-located plants will be capable of producing up to 43 gigawatt hours each for a total of 86 gigawatt hours annually. Together, these American-made batteries will power next-generation electric Ford and Lincoln vehicles. Getting serious about electric vehicles! And happy to see some manufacturing coming back to the states. |
11,000 new jobs; good jobs! Bravo!
I believe Ford has like 150K reservations? Not sure... Heck, a few years ago EVs were only for rich Calirornia granola heads. Elon's whack, but he has changed the world. For the better. America is leading the world, once again! Bravo! |
Yep....about time the domestic companies started investing in new American plants. I'm not a fan of EVs, but at least it will mean American jobs...better yet if UAW, although, with the Tennessee location, I wouldn't bet on unionization.

Excellent job Ford
Better be right…just 1% of cars are on American roads are EVs…so that’s a lot of money. will NOT be UAW unless they vote. here is a long but great summary article https://www.cp24.com/mobile/world/fo...ries-1.5602793 |

Ford predicts 40% to 50% of its U.S. sales will be electric by 2030 Good on Ford for not screwing around and "waiting for the right time" to do something. I am skeptical they will actually pull it off in a timely manner but hope they do. |

Probably low-cost land, plenty of room to build, and not very far from big-city Memphis.
But with 6,000 new jobs, you can bet that Stanton will grow pretty quickly, adding supporting businesses like stores and restaurants. |

Yes, it's hard to get Unionized plants in the South. The workers seem afraid of them. The former Saturn workers at the Spring Hill, TN plant were unionized, but it was a special UAW contract that, at the time, was different from anything else in the industry.

What Ford is doing is exactly what manufactures used to do before everything was off-shored to China starting in the 1980s. Being close to Texas as well as Mexico helps big time as a lot of parts will be coming from Mexico |

Yep. In the middle of nowhere from a land perspective, yet only 16 minutes from Brownsville (pop 183k), 45 minutes from Jackson (pop 67k), and 50 minutes from downtown Memphis (many of the suburbs being significantly closer). The Memphis metro has a population of 1.3M.

Tennessee, in general, seems to be a magnet for auto companies and their facilities. Saturn built their Spring Hill facility there...still used for other GM products. Nissan built a plant in Smyrna...and their North American HQ in Franklin. VW has an assembly plant in Chattanooga. GM is going to build a second (battery) plant near Spring Hill. And now this big Ford complex. Tennessee must be giving these companies a lot of tax credits. ;) |

Because there is no current UAW “Baggage”. Lower cost to manufacture compared to northern states. Wages in the south are lower.
