They’re not going to attract any new buyers to this segment for this truck. If I’m a big 3 truck owner, there is no reason to leave the brand that is part of my persona to come to Toyota and face the ridicule of my peers for this. Originally Posted by LexsCTJill

That doesn’t mean this is bad, it’s not but it’s only going to appeal to Toyota people.

I saw that you agreed. Toyota consolidated their Japan and the US truck/suv designs. The SUVs will be the same. So this new truck is based on the same platform as a Land Cruiser, or Lx and it will be scalable, to be larger or smaller for the 4R as well as the other Hillux pick up. This is for the Toyota fan, and they nailed everything to make it work for them. While a lot of people who keep ragging on it misses, is that Toyota has designed this to be a profit making machine based on the sales they get. Tacoma will be very similar to this and will be sharing parts and design elements.Originally Posted by SW17LS

You have to understand that something being a "profit making machine" doesn't excite car enthusiasts. When I look at cars and think about cars, I don't get a thrill out of seeing P&L statements, its the vehicle itself that excites me. We know that Toyota is all about making as much profit as they can and that every product design is geared towards that...but thats actually a negative for us as enthusiasts not a positive.Originally Posted by LexsCTJill

it will for the Toyota fan. That is the target. The domestic brands they are not trying to switch them over. There is nothing wrong with that strategy Originally Posted by SW17LS

Profitability doesn't excite fans of anything except business. Do you think people have meets of Toyota enthusiasts and bring the latest P&L and revenue projections with them to talk about? No. The products themselves make them enthusiasts.Originally Posted by LexsCTJill

Toyota has a core demographic of enthusiasts in America that are really only still supported in trucks. They have the Tacoma which is wildly popular and has a huge cult following, the 4 Runner and on the higher end the GX and LX. These legacy vehicles make a TON of money for Toyota, which is why they exist and enthusiasts benefit from that.
Toyota is a very profitable company, they just don't have much to offer an enthusiast any longer, outside of trucks.

You are hanging onto every word I say. This new Tundra was designed for the Toyota enthusiast. This is why it will be very profitable. Originally Posted by SW17LS

You responded to what I said, "being a profit making machine doesn't excite car enthusiasts" with "it will for the Toyota fan". If that didn't mean "being a profit making machine will excite Toyota fans" then that was a failure to communicate.Originally Posted by LexsCTJill

I agree that Toyota fans will like this truck. Down the line if everything is on the same platforms and the fun is engineered out, then that may change.

FWIW by default my pick for a pickup truck would be a Denali for the Corvette V8 and finally significantly(!!) updated interior, and I like GM trucks. They are solid. But my second choice would be this Tundra, or I possibly would buy the Tundra. I would just have to really scrutinize both. I'm realllllly digging this Tundra.

Oh I'm quite sure a new generation Lexus IS is coming. In fact, I think the next IS will be a larger and more upscale car to either take over the place previously occupied by the Lexus GS or it will be positioned as a tweener to try to capture some of both the (albeit shrinking) compact and mid-size sports sedan market. Toyota/Lexus didn't spend all that R+D on the 3.4LTT and the IForce Max 3.4LTT not for it to be used almost ubiquitously in their joint lineup.Originally Posted by SW17LS
What RWD Lexus products? Seriously I'm not joking, they don't make any. The IS won't survive another generation, you have the LS which the engine is already in, and the LC and thats it.
Corollary : The 2GR V6 and UR V8 were Toyota's and Lexus' workhorse engines. The 2.4L T and 3.4L TT/IForce Max will similarly be their workhorse engines for the foreseeable next 5-10 years

I think Mazda and Toyota will share the next IS models…Toyota will do all the hybrid/EV tech….Mazda will do the inline 6 gas version Originally Posted by natnut

They have two excellent sports cars Supra & GR86 in the US. In other markets they also have the GR yaris which is probably the most enthusiast focused hot hatch in recent times.Originally Posted by SW17LS
