We expect to see Toyota's new three-row SUV shortly after the new Tundra's reveal this year, and it'll likely use the same new platform and twin-turbo V-6 engine.

A new generation of the 2022 Toyota Tundra full-size pickup truck will make its debut soon, which can only mean that a new Sequoia three-row SUV should also arrive in the near future. Like in its past two generations, the Sequoia will be closely related to the Tundra, and both of these new Toyotas will use an updated platform and new six-cylinder powertrains, possibly including a hybrid.

Toyota's new trucks will use the automaker's TNGA-F body-on-frame platform that underpins the recently revealed 300-series Land Cruiser. The Land Cruiser and Tundra both use a solid rear axle, but the Sequoia should continue to have an independent rear suspension setup, typical of three-row SUVs. This latest Land Cruiser won't be sold in the U.S.—although its upmarket Lexus LX cousin likely will be—meaning that the Sequoia will effectively replace the Land Cruiser at the big end of Toyota's U.S. SUV lineup.

Our artist's image shows what the new SUV could look like. It's based on a Toyota photo of the 2022 Tundra's off-road-focused TRD Pro model, a variant that the Sequoia should also get. Differences between the two in previous generations were seen in the headlights and grilles, so we expect the Sequoia's grille to look less dramatic than the new Tundra's.

The current Sequoia's 381-hp V-8 is likely to be replaced by a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine that is also expected to power the new Tundra. This engine makes 409 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque in the Land Cruiser. A hybrid drivetrain using this boosted six cylinder is also likely; the blue lettering in a teaser image of Toyota's new iForce MAX powertrain could be a hint at that. Each powertrain will pair with a 10-speed automatic transmission, and rear- and four-wheel-drive configurations will be available.




Toyota has revealed some details of the new Tundra's interior, including a look at a larger center-mounted touchscreen with Apple CarPlay capability and a JBL sound system (pictured above). This equipment should port over into the Sequoia, too. Overall, the new model's interior will be a big improvement over the current model's dated cabin, which has a small 7.0-inch touchscreen. These changes will also help the Sequoia compete with other three-row SUVs' tech-filled cabins, as Ford is looking to update the Expedition full-size SUV with a new infotainment screen and the Chevy Tahoe comes with a 10.2-inch touchscreen. Wireless charging should also be available on the Sequoia, as seen on teaser images of the new Tundra.

Expect to hear more about the new Toyota Sequoia shortly after the 2022 Tundra makes its debut in the coming month. It should arrive by the end of next year, likely as a 2023 model to follow the Tundra, and it will be built alongside the full-size truck at Toyota's factory in San Antonio, Texas.
