That's why I mentioned the 3 and Y with the new battery pack. The old ones had this issue like GM. The new S and X have had this revision for awhile too.

 

4-5 years from now..who knows what issues might come up with the new 3/Y battery pack....It will always been a issue....just like gas cars.....Hyundai recently announced that those with certain gas engines should not park their cars in a garage....there will always be these fire issues gas or battery electric and even fuel cell.....Toyota included as well. (defects in manufacturing will never go away)

Flying battery cells that ignite bedrooms is a new thing....

 

I guess anything can be an issue but the 3/Y pack has been Tesla's best iteration so far. EVs are so new that every generation makes large strides forward. The current design will go away soon for the new 4680 cell so it's a very quick moving industry.

All it takes is one small defect from somewhere in the build of the car....Toyota had a big recall of Prius batteries in the past. Best iteration for sure...but probably the most cost cut for manufacturing efficiency as well.

I agree that things could go wrong but you have to acknowledge that the Model 3/Y pack hasn't had the issues that past packs have had. It's been very safe and reliable and has been the most manufactured battery in the world.

 

I am sure the current battery packs are safe and reliable.... Just the like the battery packs before them.....they never would have released the S when it came out if it was not reliable. On the flip side, the mass production of the current model could have an unknown defect somewhere down the line....in the millions of units etc etc. I don’t think the engineering or design would likely be the issue, but a component defect during the manufacturing or assembly IMO.

The driver of this car was fortunate and the Tesla did crash well in this instance. The engineers plan and design for a range of scenarios for occupant safety. Out in the wild those designs issues can be found by the stupid-Darwin award testers.

I've seen a variety of battery destruction tests on YT using Li-ion cells. Those are some stupid people. An exploding 18650 Li-ion cell shattered the windows of one users balcony and exposed him to the fumes.

 

This will get the attention of Elon. I guess if a system can be abused, it will be abused.
