They can put a smaller screen with basic instrumentation in front of the driver instead of resorting to a HUD.

How about the number somewhat obscuring something in the road in front of you? Sounds distracting to me
much much safer then looking down.....

How do you know that? Maybe it is, maybe not. I can understand applying the common sense rule and saying, yet it is safer. But is it? And by how much? Or perhaps having something always in your near field of view is worse.

I've driven a Model 3 it took me a couple of minutes to adjust after that it was fine glancing slightly to the right. Tesla having the option for a HUD that could toggle would be ideal.

It's not just the glancing to the side - your eyes also have to change focal distance when switching from scanning the road to looking at a screen close to you, and then back again. With a properly designed HUD, the image/numbers are opaque/see-through and you almost never have to change your eye focus.

I also thought HUDs were a useless gimmick at first. That was until I drove a car with one. It's now a must-have option for me.

Does anyone here who is claiming a HUD isn't much better or might be even worse than normal gauges right below eye level or a stupid screen in the center of the dash actually have a HUD in their car(s)?

Tesla put a single screen in the center of the dash of the 3 and Y and no other gauges for one reason and one reason only. COST.

I haven't driven the LS500 with the 24" HUD but i'd love to for that reason alone.

And? Tesla's are already too expensive the entire mission of Tesla is to make EVs as affordable as possible. If you have some way for them to include every tech gadget and still keep the costs down they will be happy to hire you instantly.

unlike something like 4-wheel steering, HUD wouldn't/shouldn't be expensive to add as an OPTION.

How much does it cost to implement? Or does Tesla go to Radio Shack and buy a HUD kit. Will Tesla see short term profits selling the option? Given Tesla still has massive build out costs they need to pick and choose where they spend money very carefully. If you can show a cost/benefit analysis please do.

It's not spectacular as it could have been, wish there was more AR implementation (most likely they don't have technology for it). I agree HUD is great once you try it

We have HUD in the Avalon. It’s outstanding. (Speed limits...land trace...cruise distance...
speed...rpm...radio...navigation....Emergency BRAKE..). All there to see. It’s a no brainer for safety and convenience . Tesla are without a lot of stuff, birds eye...cooling seats...sunroofs. So I am not surprised Tesla’s don’t offer it. Tesla’s don’t even have Apple Car Play.

GM had heads up back in the 1990s...Tesla should be offering it on new models.

Your defense of tesla not adding features available on other cars for DECADES is weak. Maybe if they spent less money implementing old video games or fart cushions, etc. they'd have no problem implementing HUD at least as an option.
