The last time I posted that same picture of the LS400 interior you gushed all over it lol
Of all the cars I've had with cartridge style CD changers, thats the best implementation. Almost like using a home component CD changer, I loved how it was finished in wood when that was hidden unless it was opened. Also didnt take any storage away from the glove box or center console.
Those kinds of little touches are IMO whats missing from Lexus interiors today, and I see that same type of detail in my S Class. As a matter of fact, my S Class reminds me of that LS400 a lot. Other touches in that LS400, the special super soft padded leather in the door pulls where the tips of your fingers find them, the super soft headrests. The way each door was damped to open in the same amount of time.

I like the look of the LS400....Just don't like the look of the second CD player door (which I thought was a second glove box)

I have always felt that Lexus did a really good job with GS interiors, right up through the now discontinued 4GS. I am obviously biased but I think they did a really good job on the 4GS interior, with very high quality materials and nice touches. Pretty much everything is soft touch, right down to the lower door panels. Nice touches abound, like the foam in the bottom of the door pockets to keep things quiet if they slide around, the rear seat belt extenders, the large (for the time) navigation screen, color HUD, etc.
I always thought the 1GS was incredibly comfortable and I loved the EL gauge cluster. I found the 2GS edgy, and pushing Lexus in a new and exciting direction. I thought the 3GS was luxurious and very well put together. And as noted, I am smitten with the 4GS interior. I would have loved to see what they would have come up with for a 5GS.
For CD changers, I liked it in my 2011 Tacoma where you just loaded all 6 CDs right into the head unit. I used that a lot, but it's not something I would use now with streaming, of course.
My GS has this area closed off with black trim as you mention above. Something pretty small, but I really like it.
It was the matching textured part that really put it over the top IMO. The other thing I really like is when cars do the vent in the door instead of adding to the dash
This is my 2005 GS430 Interior, is much better than my GS400 and also i like better than any of the newer GS's. I do like the 4th Gen GS but the old style quality in the 2GS will never be again like this.

Lovely photos. I really like that Lexus has those little painted arrows on the seat controls. My new 21 4Runner has them, such a nice touch.
Another thing I like about those old school interiors is they arent trying to be something they're not. If it looks like leather, its leather. If it looks like wood, its wood. If its not leather or wood, it doesnt pretend to be.

that does look immaculate! i really miss that era of toyota
everyones talking about the big screens these days, well this has FIVE of them lol
and gotta love the wood on the steering wheel, something added for 1999
I love everything about this pic. The tan interior looks so great in those cars. I had a 96 LS - black with tan - it looked very similar to this (minus a few things added for 98-00). That is still my favorite LS I've ever owned.

Those interiors and ones like it were just so warm and inviting and just looked upscale, they were easy to use, much better then slapping a big touchscreen in the center and having to swipe and surf through menu's and apps just to do things.
