2020 Hyundai Sonata: Not The Prettiest Midsize Sedan But Pretty Darn Good

Hyundai continues to rival the likes of the Mazda6, Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima with the Sonata, which for the eighth generation brings new styling, technologies and engines.


The redesigned exterior makes it look sportier than the car it replaces, although it’s still not the prettiest one in the midsize sedan segment. The low and wide grille dominates the front end, chrome stripes run down the sides, and a continuous lighting signature emphasizes the vehicle’s width at the back.

In terms of build quality, the 2020 Sonata could easily pass as a premium offering, with very good materials used throughout the interior, ambient lighting, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 8-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (optionally available with a 10.25-inch display). The shift-by-wire gear selector might not be to everyone’s liking, but it does look sleeker than before

I like the digital gauges. Nice touch. The new buttons they are using I like, never was a fan of the old switchgear. Nice interior although they clearly copied and are nowhere near original. The buttons for switching gears look ok. Front seats look like they are from a Buick LaCrosse. I like how you can use your phone to unlock the car. Laminated side windows on the front...wow!

Hideous rear end. Front looks weird. I kind of like the strange DRL going up the hood, that is an interesting touch. . Scorpion lights out back are awful.

Hyundai has put a good effort into this car.

I agree with Steve on the front end....awful. The dash, though, from the small image provided in the article, looks pretty good....styled more or less along the new Lincoln themes.



Not surprising. Well-crafted interiors and solid parts has been the case with Korean products now for a number of years. In fact, for years, they have been so good in this area that some of the latest ones are actually somewhat of a letdown.



For comfort, what's important is not necessarily that they look like they are from a Lacrosse, but feel like they are. If they do.....so much the better. ;)

Problem is, someone else probably can, too, with your phone......unless it works on fingerprint-ID technology.

It literally looks like a catfish.

What designer looks at a catfish and says "this is an example of such natural beauty I must use its likeness in my design"

Also the case with some recent Toyotas. The difference is, the Toyotas look like a closed-mouth catfish...the Sonata an open-mouth one LOL.

At least Toyotas are....aggressive catfish lol....this catfish is...not

I don’t see catfish in the newer Toyota’s. Seems that comment was in response to the Hyundai comment.

Yeah I agree with this. Your phone is no easier to lose than your keys. If anything, harder to lose since most people keep them so close. And your phone can be wiped or turned off remotely if it is lost, unlike a key.

Eventually keys will absolutely be 100% integrated into phones.

I think this may look better in person. Pics don’t always show what you see in real life. Also. I think when it is parked next to something older, then you really can see the beauty of a new design

I use my phone to pay for stuff. From what I understand, it is far more secure than any credit card or debit with tap. So this is the right move by Hyundai.

Yep, ApplePay/etc is more secure than using your actual card.

I believe the looks are done on purpose. Hyundai wants a reaction out of you either good looking or terrible looking. They definitely do not want a meh, that would be the kiss of death. . If you look at the GM, Ford and Chrysler sedans that are getting canned, they look OK. But are never polarizing. GM starting doing this with the new trucks however, started to make their trucks looking polarizing

Its really underpowered. I don't see how this competes with the Mazda 6, Honda Accord, or Toyota Camry.
