Default Foreign Pickups in the US market?

We know America's love obsession with trucks. The big 3 domestics reign supreme offering everything from mid-size all the way up to full ton trucks.

CURRENT
Chevy/GMC: Colorado/Canyon, Silverado/Sierra 1500, Silverado/Sierra 2500, Silverado/Sierra 3500
Ford: Ranger, F-150, F-250, F350
Ram: 1500, 2500, 3500

Then there are the outliers, some successful, others not so much.

CURRENT
Honda: Ridgeline
Nissan: Frontier, Titan
Jeep: Gladiator
Toyota: Tacoma, Tundra

Some past tries with conventional and odd pickups

PAST/DISCONTINUED
Cadillac Escalade EXT/Chevy Avalanche
Chevy El Camino
Chevy SSR
Dodge Dakota/Mitsubishi Raider
Ford Explorer Sport (2nd and 4th gen)
Ford Ranchero
Mazda B-Series (Ranger)
Subaru Baja
Subaru Brat
Suzuki Equator (Nissan Frontier)

Some future pickups slated to join the party

FUTURE
Tesla Pickup
Rivian R1T

What about these foreign pickups, would America accept them? Let's hear your thoughts!

THE CONTENDERS:

VOLKSWAGEN AMAROK

Rumor has it the next Amarok will be based on the Ford Ranger due to the Ford-VW Alliance

TOYOTA HILUX

Could the indestructible Hilux displace the Tacoma?

NISSAN NAVARA

Most likely coming to the US as the next iteration of the Frontier

MERCEDES-BENZ X-CLASS

Shares underpinnings with the Navara due to Benz's alliance with Nissan-Renault Alliance

MITSUBISHI TRITON

The main rivals to the Triton are the Hilux and Navara

FIAT FULLBACK

Shares underpinnings with the Mitsubishi Triton

ISUZU D-MAX

Shares underpinnings with current Chevy Colorado

MAZDA BT-50

Shares underpinnings with current international Ford Ranger

RAM 700

Currently sold exclusively in Mexico

I wouldn't call any of these offerings COMPACT.

Big 3 will still win...followed by Toyota. any of these trucks would need to build stateside, so I doubt it would work out importing any of them.

I would take a Hilux over a Tacoma any day.

You mentioned the El Camino, which was in production from 1959 to 1987. I've said before, and still think, that GM's Australian-designed Holden Maloo would have made an excellent contemporary El Camino for Chevy. In fact, when the Pontiac Division was axed, there was at least some tentative plans in the works to try and market it as a sedan-based Sport-Truck package for Pontiac. Holden products are also well-built, with a good reputation.

In fact, since GM severed its ties with Holden, a similar-type vehicle could probably be fashioned, without much trouble or expense, from the current Malibu....but that might (?) be getting somewhat off-topic on my part, since you specifically mentioned foreign-sourced products.

This is due to the Chicken Tax. It was a retaliatory tariff placed by President Johnson on the importation of light trucks(and other goods) after France and West Germany placed tariffs on the importation of US chicken.

This is why the Japanese trucks sold in the US are manufactured here. They aren't going to open up another assembly facility to produce the Hilux domestically when they already have the Tacoma here. Especially when they're going to have change the Hilux anyway to adapt to US safety, emissions, and efficiency regulations.

Allegedly Ford is going to bring a small pickup back... I posted this before

Ford Exec Confirms a Small Pickup Is Coming That Will Slot beneath the Ranger

Return of the Ford Courier small pickup? Signs point to yes.

Jim Farley, Ford president of global markets, has confirmed that the company is working on a new compact pickup that will slot in Ford's lineup below the Ranger. According to a report in Automotive News, Farley made the remarks while speaking at the Deutsche Bank Global Auto Industry Conference in Detroit. Farley said that Ford is "investing in more affordable versions of our truck business" and added, "You can expect new nameplates below where we compete today."

This news dovetails nicely with our earlier report that Ford was planning a subcompact pickup to fill the physical and spiritual void left by not only the car-based Ford Courier small pickup, which was sold in countries such as Brazil and Mexico, but also the Mazda-based compact pickup truck that Ford sold in the United States throughout the 1970s and early 1980s.

While we still don't have confirmation on markets in which the new compact pickup will be sold, C/D recently acquired this set of spy photos of a heavily camouflaged small vehicle testing in Michigan. The photographers insist that the vehicle, although clad to resemble a small van, is a small, car-based pickup truck. Additionally, Ford recently applied to trademark the Courier name with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

As we reported earlier, the new model will share its underpinnings with the latest global Ford Focus compact car. A hybrid model is a possibility. The market for pickups of any size has never been hotter, and if Ford wants to capitalize on the current demand, it'll want to start dropping official teasers as soon as possible.
