Default What will be the next sedan to be eliminated from the US market?

Listening to Motor Week podcast yesterday with hubby. They believe the following sedans are up for elimination in some way or combination.

Sonata
Passat (they strongly believe this will be one)
Mazda 6
Malibu (they claim GM is having strong arguments pro and con on whether to make another gen model or improvements to the current)

They believe all the sedans front Toyota and Honda are very safe.

Thoughts? Predictions?

I'd say one of the Maseratis.

Sonata spy shots of the next generation have already been widely spotted.
Passat, maybe recombines with the int'l market model.
Mazda6, possible as the CX-5 is over half of the brand's overall sales.
Malibu, maybe.

The Malibu is popular with fleet sales.

Of those four, I'd say the Passat is the most likely....although the current-generation American Passat is more in tune with the likes/dislikes of the average American sedan buyer than previous versions were. It was designed specifically for the American market.....different from Euro versions.

Does anyone have the time or energy to post the sales numbers from each brand car in this thread for 2018? I would but I am sort of at work not in my office and can’t really do the research on my phone. Would appreciate if someone would help.

Kia Cadenza, at least in the US. Currently selling <200 per month (151 in Jan).

GS was mentioned. Motorweek did not see the point in having a GS. I didn’t want to mention that it my first post as it would just turn into another GS only discussion

But even that is dwindling. It's not really "popular" with fleets more than it is shoved out to fleets to release inventory and keep production at certain levels. Fleets want to have what people want, and that's more crossovers.

Yeah I feel the GS is an easy answer, seeing as how Lexus is oddly tight-lipped on the GS's future in general.

Did anyone mention the Sonic sedan? I basically never see those on the road, just the hatch mostly.

No. just the sedans I mentioned. They were very heavy on the idea that GM wants to be know for having one of the last American branded sedans. Perhaps they’ll MW know more bam we do.

My thoughts as potential candidates:

Acura RLX
Lexus GS
Infiniti Q70
VW Passat
Chevy Malibu

Yeah. I do see the Sonic about quite a bit more than some vehicles, but not as much as, say, the Versa sedan. I mean the Fusion was pretty common, and yet it got axed.

Knowing what you just said about GM wanting to hold onto sedans, maybe they'll keep the Sonic around.

Another one that came to mind was the Mazda 6. Mazda has had a lot of success with crossovers, yet I do see the 6 on the road quite a bit - not nearly as many sales as the Mazda 3 naturally, due to its price point. But I do wonder when Mazda will decide it's more worth it to just invest in crossovers only. The 3 and 6 are their only non-crossover vehicles outside of the MX-5. (Though, they do have a pickup and minivan in markets outside the US... and a Mazda 2.)

So are the Impala and Fusion. We all see how that's gone.

I'm going to say Malibu, Continental, GS, Cadenza, and Maxima are the most likely.

I always do a double-take when I see a newer RLX. They are a pretty niche class of vehicle at the moment. Tweener midsize/fullsize FWD-based sedan? Yeah not sure about that. I guess the Maxima also falls into that space, but it's significantly cheaper and less luxury-oriented.

I agree with the Q70 going out as well. Infiniti seems not to be investing a lot in it. I think the Q50 is very much sticking around, by contrast. It is one of Infiniti's best sellers, outselling everything except the QX60. The Q70 sold just 4479 units in 2018. Admittedly, even the GS beat it.
