how much did your insurance go up after your first small accident?
Got into a small low speed bender in my blind spot. Was at fault. My rear door got dented in by a large SUV while changing lanes.
Their SUV had some paint transfer on their front bumper, but otherwise no noticeable damage.
Not really any major damage on my GS besides the door. I estimate the total to replace the door, and repaint the whole side will cost $4000-5000. Plus I might be responsible for the SUV's whole bumper being replaced/repainted, which will probably cost another $1000.
AAA will definitely want to recoup that cost. There's no free lunch.
If you have been in a small accident before, what % did your premium rise after your first collision? (assuming you don't have accident forgiveness)

With some companies, and their Forgiveness programs, rates will not go up at all, even if you are at fault. My own company (GEICO) is one of them.....the first chargeable accident is overlooked if you otherwise keep your nose clean for five years.

Geico increased my premium twice in 2017 & 2018 with 10% increase each time after a 2016 accident with another Geico insured driver. The claim was $5,600 and we are not at fault. Not sure if it will go up again in 2019.

Many of the forgiveness programs come at an additional premium. So they've already collected the $$ from the driver to pay for what would have been the increase associated with the accident.

If your record is clean and you have no other claims, it might not go up at all.
This is why you don't want Geico. Resist the low price.

Even without the forgiveness program it still may not go up

I got the surprise of my life a couple of years ago when GEICO, out of nowhere, suddenly cut my rates essentially in half, even though my vehicle, risk-factor, or driving conditions had not changed. (I still had the Verano). Apparently, the way they explained it, a new law went into effect in Virginia which drastically affected those with a good history and driving record like me.

Progressive was notorious for this. When we first switched to them from Mercury, they offered a too good to be price for 3 of us. After 6 months, it went up more than $200. As they years went on, its slowly progressed to about $1250 every 6 months. Sadly even at that rate, it's still the cheapest among the big names. Allstate, statefarm, geico, etc are still much higher. They could honestly pass on their savings to customers if they got rid of their idiotic marketing depts. Progressive has Flo and that stupid talking contract. Why have 2 mascots for your brand? Nix them both and pass that savings onto the consumer. Insurance is something you have to have while driving, so best way to win someone over is with cheap rates and good service. Geico still does the gecko and stupid random commercials. Thank goodness they've nixed the caveman crap. Don't get me started on the other guys too. /rant /tangent.
OP, keep your eyes open. There are always alternatives to whom you have. You may be lucky, and they may look at your historical driving record to see it was a fluke. Just whatever you do, don't go with General Auto Ins:

They track where all that business comes from, and they do the ads because they work. If they didn't work, they wouldnt do them.

Unfortunately your assessment on that doesn't ring true. Those marketing campaigns from Progressive and Geico are hugely successful and offer some of if not the best ROI in the business, I read a book about image marketing one time and they specifically cited those advertisement campaigns and all the ROI numbers, etc. The reason they have two different mascots and different ad campaigns (Geico and the Gecko, the Cavemen, etc) is part of what makes them so successful. The different campaigns are designed to target different demographics, and having different campaigns helps them get more mileage out of their marketing in general. If a Geico commercial were ALWAYS the Gecko or Progressive were ALWAYS Flo you tune them out more than you do if they mix it up. The Cavemen aren't gone. They'll be back.
