So, we are coming home from my surprise birthday celebration last evening at 2am. We stop for slices of pizza (which were awful) and when I come back to the vehicle my check engine light comes on, as well as two VSC lights.

I am afraid it is something to do with my cat as it has been running a bit off the last while. Husband scanned the code on my scan reader. That said, it is now 15 years old. However the downer is that it has less miles than our Matrix. Such is life.

Congratulations on your birthday. Hope it went well in spite of the 4Runner problems. :) (I've gotten to the point where I'm tired of counting my own birthdays LOL). :D

On the converter, even if it turns out to need replacement, 15 years on its lifespan, if you drive it regularly, is certainly nothing to complain about. I assume that you use a good Top-Tier fuel, with good detergents in it, instead of the El Cheapo stuff. Keeping the engine clean inside will also go a long way towards extending converter life.

Seems to be good. Husband cleared the codes and scanned again, all good.

It was the coldest night last night, very close to freezing. Warmed up quite a bit today. So I wondering if that has something to do with it.

Good. :) That is always the first thing to check (and, of course, the quickest, easiest, and least-expensive) when a Check Engine light comes on. The cap has to have a perfect seal, to prevent the leakage of raw gas fumes past it, which can trigger the light. Sometimes the cap just isn't on tight enough.....other times, the seal wears out and the cap has to be replaced....but that is a relatively simple and inexpensive matter. You would also be surprised at the number of people who drive off and leave their gas caps sitting on the pump.....the cap-tethers that come with a lot of new vehicles are flimsy and tend to wear out or break.

Yes, 40s here last night. It's been way above normal, in both temperature and humidity, across much of the Eastern U.S. since early September, and a lot of people are jolted by the sudden change to true fall weather for the first time this season. Their bodies are not used to it.

bad O2 sensor?

That wouldn't be explained by the simple tightening of the gas cap, though. Also, a bad O2 sensor would likely result on an overly-rich or overly-lean mixture, which would affect starting, warm-up, gas mileage, and overall drivability.
