JDM 2019 ES Models Will Get Cameras Instead of Mirrors
Daily Slideshow: We've had cameras helping us park for years. Why not also have cameras helping us monitor lanes, instead of mirrors? Well, that's just what Lexus has done with the latest ES in Japan.By Lance Branquinho - October 8, 2018

I see a couple of possible things going on here:
1. Lexus and Audi are licensing each other's patents.
2. Lexus is copying Audi. Manufacturers get scared when other manufacturers bring out something entirely new, and so it becomes top priority to be on the even playing field, which is why the screen looks tacked on.
I think the cameras look pretty sweet. That said, I've never been in a wreck with the current ones that I have now which cost a 1/10th of these cameras.

Lexus Champion
Toyota (Lexus) does not like to license parts and products developed by others outside of its core family of suppliers. Toyota likes to keep the development of new technology within its family of suppliers.
That is possible but it is also possible that Audi copied Toyota's technology.
But I believe a third trajectory, that both Toyota / Lexus and VW / Audi separately developed the technology and it is just a coincidence that they are being introduced at about the same time.

i think the exterior camera mirror looks huge, ugly, and sticks out way too far.
plus i've realized (with cameras and sensors) i basically NEVER use my side mirrors any longer.

It is a luxury car.. cost of camera is hardly an issue, otherwise it would be in Toyota Yaris and not in $50k Lexus.
