Not everything’s about snow. Some people go off roading wherever. And Houston certain has torrential rainstorms where 4x4 is at least reassuring if not life-saving.

True, but under some circumstances, a 4X4 can get overwhelmed by water just as easily as a 4X2. That's why the signs that say "Turn Around.....Don't Drown" mean what they say.

What are you going on about?

Most people have no need for 4WD. But it is nice to have. I have had it all my life and wherever I have lived I have tried to have 4WD. I would rather have full time 4WD like 4Runner Limited or GX. In Houston, probably not gonna need it, but you don’t exactly live there. I have no idea if that truck is 4WD, it’s nice to have 4WD in any sort of rain storm.

I'm not "going on" about anything LOL. I congratulated a CL member on his purchase (which is customary here in Car Chat), and made a comment about the (presumed) drive-line. Bitkahuna made a (valid) point about 4X4 sometimes being useful in rainstorms as well (which I'm aware of, having owned an Outback for six years)...and I countered by pointing out that floods can, and do, take out 4X4s as well. I stand by what I said.

4TehNguyen...looking forward to your first Owners' Report.

Your argument and example would have more merit if you showed an SUV getting flooded. Instead of some likely fwd sedan

Can't really tell the specifics of the vehicle. That was not the intent, though....the obvious intent is to use good judgement, and not fall into the common trap of thinking that you can make it across the flooded zone when you might not be able to. Fire departments and search/rescue teams spend a lot of time lifting these bozos out of the water when they should have sense enough not to go in to start with.

to me it is the heavier duty vehicle for the house and plan to keep it for at least 10 years (hence buying the best Ram 1500) so i definately wanted 4x4. Moms house has her LX470 has her heavier duty vehicle. 2WD only gets stuck very easily. The option of 2WD mode and 4WD auto along with the typical 4 Low and 4 High is good. It even has an LSD but not the rear diff locker

Very nice!

I would never buy any truck or SUV 4x2 regardless of where I lived.

Your cherry picked scenario doesn't invalidate other legitimate scenarios.

There are few, if any, legitimate scenarios, when the water is more than a couple of feet deep....less than that, for some lower-slung vehicles. Most of us (except maybe for Arnold Schwarznagger) don't drive Hummer H1s....and even they have their limitations.

A well equipped and modified Land Cruiser would do it. Range Rover too. G wagon. There are numerous videos out there.

True, those are competent off-roaders, but an overly-can-do attitude is what often gets a lot of people in trouble.....even with vehicles like those. Even the best SUVs are not designed to be submarines.
