2019 Lexus ES is first mass-produced car to replace side mirrors with cameras

I find it interesting they are going this route. If this was a GM move. People would bash it. |
That doesn't look tacked on at all.

but it's only in Japan.
No wonder why I didn't see it mentioned in the '19 ES for here. And strange that lexus would give it to the ES first. They should've give it to the LS and LC and then trickle it down to the lesser models. |

wow, they beat the audi etron by 3 months :)
but it looks like a terrible afterthought. Audi has a much better implementation. But I also think people in Japan would be more willing to accept tech like this |
I have a hard time seeing how the small benefits can offset the added cost and complexity.

Not a fan: I feel like another screen near or close to me is another distraction...we already have cell phone nav screens, infotainment screens, some folks have a Heads Up Display options, a mini-info screen on the driver dash, and now we have another screen to view the side mirrors. Yikes!

If they had put the camera where that little black vortex generator is, I'd understand. Otherwise this is just as intrusive as a side mirror to begin with :p

Is this going to be weatherproof? Rain droplets on the lens will make the whole thing hard to see as well compared to the conventional mirrors.

Lexus says there are a couple other advantages for going digital here too. For one, the camera modules are able to resist the accumulation of raindrops and snow due to their design. |

I much prefer Honda's approach with their LaneWatch system. At least you still have the mirror.
I'm all for advancement in technology but this one....I don't know.. |
