This is definitely the new generation since the current generation was introduced in 2011. Its definitely due for a new design.
However - this is typical Porsche fashion. Porsche and BMW, to name a few, are companies which I think that does "refresh-style" new designs. So what they do is "evolve" the design rather than "change" it.
This is why is hard to tell the different generations apart for Porsche and BMW cars unless you are a car-guy. An average person would definitely get confused.

All joking aside, and there is truth in the jokes, Porsche knows exactly what its customers like - and they like a car that looks like the last one, but faster and better. That's what Porsche delivers, and the sales speak for themselves. The 911 outsells the Cayman and Boxster combined.
I bought two, I initially bought a 997 S Coupe and later traded it in for a 997 S Convertible. Fantastic cars.

The squared front air intakes totally clash with the round lines everywhere else. Otherwise, the taillights are pure evilness. If those were fitted on a sports sedan, that sedan would have increased sales- I guarantee it.
Imagine how many MORE they would sell if they did something a little different. Great is better than good. Going by Porsche's current buyer's opinions is blocking out and ignoring the opinion of the rest of an entire society- a huge chunk of the buying public.

We also have to factor in that Porsche is a niche sale brand. While they aren't as niche sales as say Ferrari, Porsche does only sell to a specific client.

I’d say there really is no “huge chunk of the buying public” for 2 seater cars which for practical purposes start at around 100k. The 911 is already the segment benchmark and segment sales leader. Porsche caters to its customers, and Porsche knows exactly what its customers want. By many measures the Cayman is objectively the better car, but it’s handily outsold by the 911. Auto manufacturers often miss the mark and sales may suffer when they do, but Porsche has 50 years into this car now and it knows exactly how to build and sell a 911. The design may be evolutionary but every generation sees engineering advances.

The 911 is a 4 seater with most models. The sales gap has grown wider ever since they took the 6 cylinder from the Cayman/Boxster. I have never been the least bit interested in a Boxster or Cayman even though they are more balanced and lighter then a 911 but I love 911's and plan to get one in the future.
