i believe only like 1500 of these were made ever for the entire world, so i couldn't help but capture the moment a little. definitely one of my all time favorites... 5.6 liter V12 produced by the M division, 6 speed manual, sleek luxurious coupe styling, and pop up headlights! this one even had the pierce brosnan 007 wheels and a great vanity plate. it's really not that fast especially by 2018 standards, but who cares?

another little tidbit, the BMW S70 (engine in this) was the basis for the engine in the McLaren F1 (S70/2) so the 850CSi is quite special company. obviously it's modified quite a bit for the F1 lol, but anyone with an 850CSi can say that the V12 in their coupe is the closest thing to the engine in what is still the world's fastest n/a production car.

Love both the cars in the picture! The W211 E55 is still a looker when clean like that.

Scary thought, how much would it cost to keep both those cars running.

I hope that one day (doubtful), my engine will be hand crafted too!

Hey did you ever do the recall on your E92 (blower motor)? I tend to get to the dealer 1/yr. so mine is outstanding, not really worried....

Rare sighting indeed. I've only seen less than 3 ever.

yea if you look there's a few M badges throughout the interior, and when BMW starts their engine code with S it pretty much always means it's designated for the M model. so it is almost like they planned to call it the M8 at one point.

thanks for the p.s. lol, and my dad got the E63 S in 2014 (W212). although ultimately not quite as fast, I think think the 55 is more fun and amusing. it feels more like a muscle car since there's such immediate overwhelming power at like any rpm, and 1st gear is often a struggle for traction despite going up to 50 mph. and also from the sound the engine itself makes (not just talking about exhaust).

the 63 with the 4matic definitely has more accessible performance for more of the time, especially if it's wet out. the back seats also fold down so we've literally gone skiing with it every so often and the occasional snow really didn't cause any issues. and apart from an initial software kink or two, it's been pretty good the whole time.

yea I imagine things can get terrifying on the 850, and that's exactly the kind of perception that makes the 55 so cheap these days haha. apart from some initial things that needed doing it really hasn't been that bad. something like a CL65 would be a different story lol.

I haven't received a recall for that part yet. Like you it took about 1 year before was able to get the airbag recall done, so I guess I'll receive it eventually. Thanks for the heads up!

Oh right, you bought an E55 a while back, I remember your thread now. Great car, way to keep it clean!

As for the CL65, I don't want to think about all the pennies it would cost to keep that handbuilt V-12 going

Love the 8 series, if they along with the CL coupe and Jag XK8 coupe were not so unreliable and expensive to maintain I would have one. I remember one of my friends at college told me his rich friends dad in NY gave his son his black 8 series coupe when he got a new BMW 7 series, must have been nice.

This is more special than the recently released “8-Series”, looks like a simple evolution of the 6. Call me when the new one decides to make a 860i 6.6L V12. Till then wonderful sighting

Okay am I the only person who doesn't see the appeal here and would much rather have a 90's Euro Spec M3 or Z3 roaster???

Yeah V12 McLaren F1 engine and all that jazz, but the F1 engine was modified from what came in the 7/8 series it might as well not be the same engine. Also this was a big/heavy coupe, the interior wasn't all that special or well made IMO(looked like any other BMW of that period), the reliability is crap, the cost to service is stupid expensive, the complexity makes it a hard car to work on yourself.

Mainly though, I don't care for the exterior styling that looks like a Toyota Mark III Supra rip-off. Yes the BMW 8 series is a great looking car, but IMO it is rather derivative and unoriginal, it has very similar proportions/dimensions as the Mark III Supra. Like that car, it kind of has the same problem of excessive dimensions, excessive weight, and a more grand touring sort of driving dynamic vs a true sports car. Not that there is anything wrong with a big grand tourer, its just that Toyota had the same idea, same shape, same sort of car 6-7 years earlier for a lot less $$$$.

I had to laugh because some guys on the forum learned from the airbag thing, and got loaner cars indefinitely for this recall too[have to admit BMW and Honda are kings at providing loaners whenever there is a recall and no part--for the duration of the part being unavailable--no other car companies did that during Takata]. I didn't because although I did with Takata, I felt this was not significant...

The Takata thing was not settled yet, right? We're all part of the class and are supposed to be issued checks. I'm just curious if it's like Sylvania where you get $4 or $8 lol (I thought hundreds if not a thousand in reality)...
