What It Is: Alfa Romeo is resurrecting its storied GTV nameplate and applying it to a sultry two-door coupe that is expected to offer as much as 600 horsepower and some form of hybrid technology. The news was announced as part of FCA’s divulging of its five-year plan, and it is but one of a flurry of upcoming vehicles for the Italian brand, including a 700-plus-hp 8C supercar, a Giulietta hatchback, a new subcompact crossover, and a new mid-size crossover.

Why It Matters: Alfa has used the GTV letters on numerous two-doors throughout its history. The letters stand for Gran Turismo Veloce, which roughly transfers to fast grand touring. Some of the most significant cars to wear the name are the GTV 2000s of the 1970s and the GTV6s of the 1980s. As Alfa continues its expansion into the U.S. market, this car should generate plenty of excitement and add another segment in which the company can compete against rivals such as Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. With the 4C fading away and the 8C expected to be a high-end halo car when it debuts, the GTV will assume the mantle of the affordable Alfa coupe

Platform: As a two-door version of the Giulia sedan that is already part of Alfa’s U.S. lineup, it will share that car’s platform and mechanicals. The GTV will likely follow the Giulia’s lead and be offered with standard rear-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive.

Powertrain: The GTV will share more than its architecture and basic looks with the Giulia. We expect entry versions of the GTV to use the Giulia’s turbocharged direct-injected 2.0-liter inline-four that makes 280 horsepower and links up with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Alfa Romeo has confirmed that the top-level GTV Quadrifoglio will have more than 600 horsepower (a massive jump up from the Giulia Quadrifoglio’s 505) courtesy of a hybrid powertrain that bakes in all-wheel drive and torque vectoring.

Competition: Audi A5, BMW 4-Series, Infiniti Q60, , Lexus RC, Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe.

Estimated Arrival and Price: Alfa hasn’t said exactly which model year will see the launch of the GTV, but it is slated to arrive by 2022. The styling, exclusivity, and increase in power will likely translate to premium prices versus those of the Giulia, which ranges from $39,440 to $75,295. Figure you’ll pay 10 to 15 percent more than that for a GTV.
