Sedan brings straight-six power to the traditional sedan.
The final piece of the inline-6-powered, midsize Mercedes-AMG lineup has been added: the 2019 Mercedes-AMG E53 sedan that will use the same 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six as the CLS53, and E53 coupe and cabrio. Producing the same 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, it features the same 48-volt ultra-mild hybrid assist combined with a starter-generator and a small electrically-driven compressor in the intake tract to help reduce turbo lag.
Power is fed to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission, the only one offered with this powertrain. Everything rides atop a sport-tuned air suspension. Considering the many similarities, it's no surprise the E53 sedan is just as fast as its two-door siblings. Its 4.4-second run to 60 mph is the same as the cabrio, and a tenth behind the coupe. That time is also the same as the sleeker CLS53 sedan. The E53 sedan also has the same electronically limited top speed of 130 mph.
Visually, the E53 picks up cues from its two-door iterations. It gets twin bulges in the hood, an aggressive diffuser design on the rear bumper, and twin exhaust tips on each side. Things are mostly typical E-Class inside, but it comes with a standard AMG steering wheel. AMG sport seats and carbon fiber trim are available options.
The sedan goes on sale late this year, as will the coupe, convertible and CLS. Pricing has yet to be announced for any E-Class or CLS-Class.

From a styling POV, the E53 changes finally make the new E worth looking at, especially the rear-end. The E300 & E43 were a little bit too soft looking but this fixes everything. From a drivetrain POV, can't wait to try it out!
Really? All thats changed from the rear is the exhaust tips. Even the diffuser is the same

I love the return of a Benz straight six with some power! However an AMG badged Mercedes that tops out at 130mph...? I'd have expected 155mph for those types of models. Sure, that's not exactly a limit one normally tests but still... it's a bit of a downgrade from most prior AMG Benzes.
Can you even imagine, that if inline sixes start becoming widespread, and clutches come back? It would be like that Virginia Slim commercial where everything comes full circle.
Plain and simple inline 6's have primary and secondary balance. Even a V8 can't say that.

In some ways I prefer the restrained styling of this over the E63. My favorite part of the '19 E/CLS53 and '19 C43 is the return of round exhaust tips!!!! I'm not sure if they're even real connected tips, but they just look so proper compared to the smushed trapezoidal ones!
The diffuser is not the same but yes, really. Sometimes that's all it takes to balance out a design and take it from not worth looking at to worth buying. Case in point, we didn't care for the ML350 or ML550 with AMG package but purchased an ML63 AMG because of the ever-so-slight cosmetic upgrades (2 extra exhaust tips, slight fender flares front + rear). Yes, it had a number of upgrades beyond those two including the powertrain but obviously an ML550 would've sufficed. Did it look as special? Nope.
Here is a picture of the E43, with the night package, but you get the gist. No doubt a great looking vehicle. I myself dislike the round pipes in favor for something more square, but I can see why they would do this, and this is a better treatment than to the existing 43 series with the fake quad set up
