Well one reason is Mercedes Benz hates feeling left out of any vehicle segment. They like all their brands bases covered. All it’s direct competitors have a super fast 4 door lift back sorta resembling a true sports car. RS7, Model S, BMW M6 GC, Porsche Panamera Turbo just to name a few. The CLS model engine options are being reduced to just 6 cylinders. So this is their answer to all these new super fast 4 door coupes on the market.

the front end looks almost exactly like the CLS? When the CLS amg comes out, it will have the same 4.0 engine too, albeit tuned differently. Interesting to see the differences in price and features. It has the same interior as the CLS/E class though...

Mercedes made the announcement some time ago that they would be discontinuing the V8 powered CLS models after 2018 model year. This 2019 4 door GT63-S model is replacing the CLS63S 4-matic. The only engine that the new 4 door GT and CLS will share going forward will be the new “53 AMG” 3.0 liter inline 6 mild hybrid aka EQ Boost. The E class, CLS & GT 4 door all are built upon the same rwd platform named MRA. They all share the same wheelbase length. If one wants a V8 midsize Mercedes sedan going forward they’ll have to choose from the E class or GT 4 door coupé.
