I will say my limited experience with each brand, the G80 is at least on the level of Lexus in terms of build quality. That's pretty high praise. It also had possibly the best door-close "thunk" sound I have ever experienced on a modern car. I definitely understand how they could rank the brand so highly - just feels like it's well-put-together.

Agreed, second only to the Mercedes G-Wagon (Gelandewagen)...and, given the fact that the G-Wagen was a military-grade vehicle (developed for the German/Austrian armies) going back to the late 1970s, one could hardly call it modern.

This is pretty telling:

Olsen wouldn't say how the scores are weighted, but because of the range of factors that go into the scoring, consumers should look at individual scores to determine the vehicle that's right for them.

Let's remember what this ranking is: a composite of CR test scores, owner satisfaction surveys, and reliability survey scores. Lexus tends to get low scores from the CR staff tests, but very high scores for reliability. Audi, on the other hand, gets great scores in tests and owner satisfaction but not so high in reliability. What the ratings mean to you depend on what you value highest in a car. The worst scores are cars that had poor scores in tests and satisfaction surveys and were also poor in reliability. What does the Genesis top score mean? It means their cars got good scores in all phases. Their reliability score was lower than Lexus but higher than Audi. Their test and satisfaction score was lower than Audi but better than Lexus. Should Genesis be ranked 1,2,or3? It really doesn't matter much. What matters is that the Genesis product rates highly in test numbers, owner satisfaction, and reliability.

I suspect that will reman (or even improve) when their SUVs debut.

In their New Car Rankings U.S. News ranks the G90 #3 in the segment behind the Tesla Model S and the A7. The G80 is rated #3 tied with the 5 Series and GS Hybrid behind the A6 and E Class. They show their sources for each car ranked.
