wouldnt be surprised if apple charged a royalty per car play license. But most makers will build it into the price of the car

and yet most people pay for a radio service(siriusxm) thru a built in radio in your vehicle that isn't an option. How much are we paying for the radio hardware? Companies will suck every last dollar out of you if they can.

I was resolved to lower my monthly costs in life, but guilty on the XM. My wife got her car in 2011 and I believe it had 3 mos. free. Since 2011, we've paid XM $25 for 6 mos., every 6 mos. Even though that program is non-existent, they still give it to us. They charge $30/6 mos., and then put up a $5 credit. This subscription has everything except Howard Stern, etc.

My buddy said his wife got him the same for XMAS, and it was like $15.99/mo., not $25 for 6 mos. dang My brother has the Howard Stern package and $25 for 6 mos. It's like the airlines, everybody pays something different.

No, manufacturers only have to pay a one time licensing fee. What BMW is doing is paywall blocking a free service.

Yep, as long people are dumb enough to pay for it they will continue to rape people, I mean charge people.

Or the Google way. Google charges just as much for their phones as Apple does. Are people also dumb for buying Pixel 2 XL's?

I guess the net net of this thread, if you don't like it, get a non BMW car. That is, if this CarPlay is more important to you than the status you would gain by driving a BMW.

Wouldn't it be funny if Apple CarPlay drained your car battery as your iPhone got older, until you replaced the phone
it's not free, it is build into the MSRP of their vehicles. they can legally call it free because it doesn't have a separate line item or subscription requirement for the first 3 years, but if you activate the "free" service you are required to provide a credit card for auto-renew, no CC, no service.

but that "free" 3 year cost, it is built into the MSRP of the base options of the vehicle. order a vehicle without OnStar and you save $2,000 or more depending on the model, and trust me, the module and the mirror do not cost $2,000 when you can go to Best Buy and purchase the "after market" OnStar FMV for $300..

corp rates blow my mind (I have seen them). Galaxy S7 for $0.99. iPhone 8 for $199. on and on. It lends to my theory of multiple sets of books. Even eBay and the gray market can't touch those prices. And those prices are from #1, not some weird carrier with no service.

I should have edited....the free 3 years is being sent to people right this instant, with cars that were sold 5-10 years ago, like 2011's...etc....

really, I haven't seen that. but cars older than 2011 won't work with the current OnStar.. My niece has a 2011 Malibu (built in mid 2010) and her OnStar was disabled last year because the hardware is no longer compatible with their network, same as Geko29 stated about his BMW.

*Edit* I just googled the offer, and it seems that OnStar has decided to turn up their old technology for owners with cars between 2006-2010 and give them 3 months free, the 3 years free is for 2011 and newer. I'm sure there is a catch, nothing is free in this world, and having been an OnStar Customer from 1999-2015 on 6 different GM models, OnStar doesn't do anything for 100%, there is always a catch.

Google Phone costs are not quite in the same league as Apple's! And if they are, then yes, those folks are also dumb.
I buy new 3-year old Sony's.

Business as usual for BMW, the price you pay for customization with love from Munich.

I guess having access to all the data thats being collected to "improve the user experience" isnt good enough.

Free Onstar is 3 years now? At this point, it's probably just because no one would pay for it. I understood the free 1-year when it came out to get you hooked on it. My M-I-L used to call us in her car through Onstar before cars all had Bluetooth. She'd hit the button and have the operator connect the call.

The Google Pixel 2XL actual costs more than the IPhone 8 Plus. Look it up on Verizon’s site.
