I was reading this article reviewing the 2019 Avalon. It mentioned that Apple CarPlay will finally be available!

i hope same applies to new/future Lexus cars.

I do like Apple CarPlay but not sure how it would function in non-Nav cars..

It's a BIG mistake, on their part, excluding Android Auto.

I'm agree total disappoint, that its CarPlay implementation will be wired, so connecting an iPhone via USB will be required. why not wireless

Very few Apple CarPlay implementations are wireless. About 95% of them require the USB connection. The only example I know of that uses wireless Apple CarPlay is the 2017 BMW M760i.

I am very surprised at Toyota changing its stance about Carplay in Lexus and Toyota vehicles that they were very strongly against just two years ago.

The press release took me by surprise, then not soo much. Toyota corp does this for everything the pioneers launch (like Apple in that thought). In regards to backwards compatibility they said something to the effect of :

"CarPlay will show up in additional 2019 cars from Toyota and Lexus that run the company’s Entune 3.0 (for Toyota) and Enform 2.0 (for Lexus) infotainment platforms as well. It has yet to clarify whether or not 2018 models already running those platforms will get support through a software update."
